Tiger Shroff Withdraws from Durand Cup with Mumbai FC

Tiger Shroff’s much-hyped competitive bow for Mumbai FC is off the table, at least for this Durand Cup.

The Bollywood star, who has been training and playing with the club since its launch in 2024, confirmed on Sunday that he will not travel to Shillong for Mumbai FC’s upcoming group-stage fixture in the 2026 Durand Cup. A late work commitment has shut the door on what would have been his first professional appearance.

The speculation had been building since July 28, when Mumbai FC named the 36-year-old in their tournament squad. Co-owner Zoheb Amrani had even suggested Shroff could feature in at least one of the group games in Shillong, stoking curiosity about how the actor would cope in a full-blooded competitive setting.

That storyline ended with a short video on Mumbai FC’s official Instagram account.

“Really, really unfortunate, but a work commitment has come up at the last moment, so I won’t be able to make it to Shillong for the Durand Cup,” Shroff said, confirming he will miss the clash against Nongkseh SS & CC.

The disappointment in his voice matched the sense of let-down among fans who had been eager to see a crossover star test himself in a serious tournament. Shroff has not treated his association with the club as a vanity project: he has regularly turned out for Mumbai FC in the Mumbai District League and joined in training sessions, building a genuine footballing routine alongside his film career.

He made it clear the desire to play remains, even if this particular chance has slipped away. Shroff said he had wanted to step onto the pitch for Mumbai FC but would now have to back the side from the sidelines.

“I’m going to do everything in my power to support you guys to the best of my capability. There’s so much young talent, and with the right support and opportunities, I truly believe Indian football can do wonders,” he said, throwing his weight behind the squad and the wider game rather than the cameo appearance many expected.

For Mumbai FC, it means the Durand Cup campaign in Shillong will proceed without the added glare of a celebrity debut. For Shroff, the wait for that first professional outing goes on, his boots staying in the bag while the club’s young hopefuls chase their moment under the lights.
