Thomas Müller Urges Bayern to Secure Young Star Johan Manzambi
Thomas Müller has seen enough. From his vantage point as a Bayern Munich legend and World Cup winner, one young midfielder is screaming out as a transfer Bayern cannot afford to let slip away – especially not to Manchester United.
That player is Johan Manzambi.
The 20-year-old Switzerland international lit up Los Angeles on Thursday night, coming off the bench to score twice in a 4-1 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina at SoFi Stadium and turning a routine friendly into a personal statement.
United scouts were watching. So was Müller. Their reactions, it seems, were very different.
United circle, but Müller wants Bayern to strike
Manchester United’s midfield rebuild is already in motion. Casemiro has gone, Manuel Ugarte is expected to follow, and the club are braced to welcome £35million signing Ederson Silva to Old Trafford this summer.
That, though, is only one piece of a much bigger puzzle.
United remain active on several fronts. They are still firmly in the frame for West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes despite Tottenham’s growing interest. Sources also indicate Real Madrid are ready to soften their stance on Aurelien Tchouameni, a long-term target for both United and Liverpool. In Italy, reports link United with Croatia and Como talent Martin Baturina, whose goal against England in his country’s World Cup opener pushed him into the spotlight.
Amid all of that, Manzambi has emerged as another serious option. TEAMtalk sources had already revealed that United had scouted him, and their interest dates back months. Arsenal have also been tracking the Freiburg midfielder since at least March.
Müller’s response to Manzambi’s latest display? He wants Bayern to get there first.
“FC Bayern should also consider him”
Müller, who collected 33 trophies during a glittering career in Bavaria, has watched Manzambi closely. Speaking to MagentaTV after the Swiss youngster’s brace in North America, he made his stance crystal clear.
“He’s a good player overall. We’ve had him on our list for a while now,” Müller said.
“For me, he’s someone, and now we can make a headline, that FC Bayern should also consider.
“You can sense his flexibility. You can also sense his carefree attitude. At the same time, you can already see a certain maturity in his actions, in his decision-making, his work ethic.
“He’s now in Freiburg in a team where they really work hard. I think his development is very, very good.
“He’s a player who can play as No.6, he can play as No.8, he can play as No.10. He wears number nine on his back, so maybe we could also market him as a striker!”
That blend – work ethic, tactical intelligence, positional versatility – is exactly what top clubs crave in the modern game. For Bayern, it is also a profile that fits their tradition of multi-functional midfielders who can adapt to different systems and managers.
For United, it is the sort of all-purpose option that could reshape Michael Carrick’s engine room in one stroke.
Freiburg’s gem steps onto the world stage
Manzambi’s rise has not come out of nowhere. At Freiburg, he was one of the Bundesliga side’s standout performers last season, contributing five goals and four assists and catching the eye with his ability to glide between lines and influence games in multiple zones.
On Thursday in LA, he took that form onto the global stage.
Thrown on against Bosnia and Herzegovina, he didn’t just add energy; he changed the game’s tone. Two goals later, Switzerland had a comfortable 4-1 win, and Manzambi had a night he will never forget.
“Honestly, it’s incredible, it’s the first brace of my career, and at the World Cup on top of that,” he said afterwards.
“Scoring two goals in front of the fans and my family, that’s very, very nice. I don’t think I’ll be able to sleep tonight.”
Those are the words of a player still pinching himself. The performance, though, belonged to someone far more seasoned.
Bayern or United – who moves first?
The market knows what is coming. A 20-year-old, already decisive at international level, already proven in the Bundesliga, already comfortable across the midfield band and beyond. Interest from multiple giants was inevitable; the question now is who turns admiration into a concrete bid.
United have a clear need and a track record this summer of moving decisively once they identify their man. Bayern, stung in recent windows when big targets slipped away, are being publicly nudged by one of their greatest ever players to act.
Müller has drawn the battle lines. Manzambi has supplied the audition. The next move belongs to the clubs – and whichever one wins this race might just be securing its midfield for the next decade.
