Sullivan Attends West Ham Match Despite Advice to Stay Away

David Sullivan, who resigned as a director and joint chairman in June, attended the tie at the London Stadium on Saturday despite being urged to stay away from home matches. His appearance came against a backdrop of serious off-field controversy and growing unease among sections of the fanbase.
Sullivan stepped down shortly before The Times and BBC Panorama published the findings of an investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct. He has strongly denied all allegations of wrongdoing, but the fallout has not stayed confined to the back pages.
On Monday, a London Stadium spokesperson told Sky Sports News that the venue had “recommended” to West Ham that Sullivan should not attend matches, citing concerns over potential fan unrest. The warning was clear: his presence could inflame tensions at a time when the club is trying to keep the focus on the football.
Supporters’ representatives went further. The West Ham United Fan Advisory Board (FAB) publicly called on Sullivan not to attend home fixtures, arguing that his presence risked becoming a “distraction” and a possible security issue.
In a detailed statement, the FAB said it remained concerned that Sullivan being at the London Stadium would cause “offence and upset” to some supporters and might provoke negative reactions inside the ground. The group also highlighted the club’s own ground regulations, which allow entry to be refused to any individual whose presence could be a source of danger, nuisance or annoyance to others.
Against that tense backdrop, West Ham did their job on the field. A 3-1 win over Portsmouth carried them into the second round of the Carabao Cup, a routine scoreline on a night that was anything but routine in the stands.
The result moves the team forward in the competition. The question now is whether the club can navigate the far more delicate territory off it.
