Southampton Squad Update: Injuries Ahead of Germany Trip

Southampton will head to Germany without Caspar Jander, Finn Azaz and Sam Edozie after the trio were ruled out of the club’s eight-day pre-season trip through injury.

Tonda Eckert has named a 29-man group for the camp in North Rhine-Westphalia, where Saints will face Eintracht Braunschweig and Preuben Munster on either side of an intensive week of work. The focus is clear: sharpen legs, tighten structure, and lock in combinations before competitive football returns.

Jander, Azaz and Edozie, though, will be staying behind at Staplewood. All three are dealing with what the club regard as minor knocks, but not minor enough to risk with the season so close. They will continue treatment and rehabilitation at the training ground while the rest of the squad flies out.

For Jander, it is a frustrating pause. The midfielder was forced off during Southampton’s first pre-season outing against Eastleigh last Saturday, just as he was trying to build rhythm and stake a claim for more minutes. His absence on tour hands others an opportunity in the middle of the pitch, but it also underlines how thin the margins are at this stage of preparation.

Azaz and Edozie miss a crucial window too. The German camp offers double sessions, tactical detail, and two fixtures against organised opposition – exactly the environment where attacking players can catch a manager’s eye. Instead, their task is more basic: get fit, stay fit, and be ready when the real games start.

Once Southampton return from Germany, the warm-up phase ends quickly. Saints launch their EFL Cup campaign against Colchester United, then dive straight into the Championship grind with an opening trip to Watford. The clock is already ticking on those “minor” knocks.
