Southampton Signs Divin Mubama on Loan as Shea Charles Leaves

Southampton have wasted no time reshaping their squad, bringing in Manchester City striker Divin Mubama on a season-long loan on the very day they sanctioned the £30m sale of midfielder Shea Charles to Fulham.

One door closes, another opens. And in Mubama, Saints are backing raw, hungry firepower.

The 21-year-old arrives off the back of a mixed year at Stoke City, where he scored five goals in 28 appearances. His season there stalled abruptly in January, when a ligament injury in a 0-0 draw with Queens Park Rangers cut short his momentum after what Stoke boss Mark Robins called a "terrible" challenge. He featured only once more for the Potters after that.

Before Manchester City came calling in the summer of 2024, Mubama had already shown flashes of promise at West Ham. A product of the Hammers’ academy, he made 18 senior appearances, including eight off the bench in the Premier League, and was on the bench as an unused substitute when West Ham lifted the Europa Conference League in June 2023.

City picked him up as a project for the future. Pre-season suggested that future might not be too far away.

On their tour of Asia earlier this month, Mubama found the net against Inter Milan and the K-League All Stars, and laid on an assist in a 3-1 win over Atletico Madrid in Seoul on Sunday. Those performances, sharp and confident, helped push his name back into the conversation for clubs searching for attacking options.

Now it is Southampton who will benefit.

"With the way this team plays, when you've got players around you that have that much quality, you will be served," Mubama told the club’s website. "It's up to you whether you put the ball in the back of the net, and that's what I'm here to do.

"I've just come back from a pre-season where I've scored goals. I've been playing, I feel really fresh, I feel sharp, so I'm just really excited to get going."

That blend of freshness and edge is exactly what Southampton’s hierarchy wanted to inject into the squad after Charles’s departure.

Sporting director Johannes Spors underlined how quickly the club moved once Mubama became an option: "As soon as we knew about Divin's availability we acted quickly to bring him here, not just because of his incredible goal scoring ability, but because of his work ethic and hunger to help the team, which will be vitally important this season."

For Saints, this is a calculated bet on upside: a young forward with Premier League experience in his background, European nights in his memory, and a point to prove after injury halted his progress.

For Mubama, it is simpler. A clear role, a defined platform, and a season to show he can turn promise into goals when it really counts.
