Scott McTominay: Napoli's New Midfield General
Naples has chosen its new heartbeat, and his name is Scott McTominay.
On the training pitches of Castel di Sangro, under the sharp gaze of Massimiliano Allegri, the Scot has shifted from useful signing to undisputed pillar. The new Napoli coach, appointed in early July 2026, has built his 4-3-3 around him, dropping McTominay into the centre of everything and asking him to drive the side both with and without the ball.

It suits him. At 29, McTominay combines imposing physicality with sharp positional sense, a blend that makes him a nightmare to track when he ghosts between the lines. For a Napoli side that thrives on quick combinations around the area, he offers the perfect bridge between the deeper builders and the finishers up top.
The fans have seen it early. During pre-season sessions at Castel di Sangro and back at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, he has drawn warm ovations, the kind reserved not just for stars, but for players who look like they belong to the city.
A contract to match his status
Napoli’s hierarchy is moving to reflect that status. The club are preparing a long-term extension that would take McTominay’s deal to 2030, with an option for an extra year. He is currently tied down until 2028 on a €3.5m annual salary, but the intention is clear: remove any doubt, remove any noise, and make him a cornerstone of the next cycle.
There is no tension around the talks. The midfielder is described as relaxed and fully committed to a long stay in Naples, content to let the club handle the timing. Allegri’s project takes shape
Allegri, who signed a three-year contract through June 2029 to replace Antonio Conte, knows exactly what he has inherited.
