Saudi Arabia Suspends $2.5bn Neom Stadium Project Amid Economic Challenges Ahead of 2034 World Cup
Saudi Arabia has halted work on the $2.5 billion Neom stadium, a key part of its plans to host the 2034 FIFA World Cup. This futuristic arena was meant to be a standout feature of the event, which will be the first-ever 48-team tournament held by one country.
Neom Venue Put On Hold
The construction of the 46,000-seat stadium within the Neom megacity is now paused indefinitely, according to MEED Projects and Reuters. The stadium was intended as one of 15 venues Saudi Arabia proposed to FIFA when it secured hosting rights. The suspension raises questions about the kingdom’s ability to deliver all planned stadiums in time.
Shift in National Priorities
The stadium was designed to rise 350 meters above ground inside The Line development, but changing priorities under Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's Vision 2030 plan have altered focus. Public Investment Fund (PIF) governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan indicated in April that The Line is no longer a top priority before 2030, contributing to the decision to delay the project.
Despite Setbacks, Tournament Plans Continue
After previous delays like the suspension of The Mukaab skyscraper project in Riyadh, Saudi officials emphasize that preparations for the 2034 World Cup are moving forward. The Saudi World Cup 2034 Hosting Higher Authority highlighted progress on other venues and infrastructure, with FIFA having praised the kingdom's overall tournament proposal as "absolutely incredible."
Economic Pressures Impact Plans
Saudi Arabia is dealing with economic difficulties following a forecasted budget deficit and a 3.6% drop in real GDP amid lower oil revenues. Regional instability, including attacks near an Aramco facility by Yemen’s Houthi rebels, adds to these challenges. Despite this, delivering the 2034 World Cup remains a major goal for Mohammed bin Salman to boost the kingdom’s global economic and diplomatic standing.
