Inter's Josep Martinez Confident in Italy's Rebound After World Cup Setbacks

Inter Milan goalkeeper Josep Martinez has expressed strong confidence in the future of Italy's national team, despite their recent struggles to qualify for the World Cup. The four-time world champions have missed three consecutive tournaments, which has deeply affected their morale and collective belief.

Belief Over Quality Issues

Martinez insists the root of Italy's difficulties is mental rather than a shortage of talent. Speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport, he highlighted the wealth of quality players available, particularly those in Serie A, many of whom are part of the Inter squad. He said, "Honestly, I see a lot of potential in Italy. They need to rediscover a defined playing model, but there's no lack of quality. There are several high-level Inter players and many other valid elements with them. They need to regain confidence after the disappointment of missing the World Cup; for me, it's more a mental thing than a quality issue."

Roberto Mancini’s Rebuilding Task

Coach Roberto Mancini faces the challenge of reshaping the team by integrating young talent to rebuild Italy's identity and restore faith within the squad. Martinez believes this process requires restoring the team's confidence as much as perfecting tactics or player selection.

Martinez's Return to International Duty

The goalkeeper also marked a personal milestone recently, receiving a call-up to the Spanish national team under coach Luis de la Fuente. This was his first inclusion since June 2021, coming after an injury to fellow goalkeeper Joan Garcia. Martinez now joins established keepers David Raya and Unai Simon in the squad.

Upcoming Test Against France

Italy's next big challenge comes in the UEFA Nations League Group A1, where they face France at the Stade de France. With Zinedine Zidane leading the French side, Mancini must prepare a tactical approach to counter a strong opponent. A positive result will boost Italy’s morale and help maintain hopes of advancing to the knockout stage.
