San Diego FC Signs Veteran Striker Cedric Bakambu from Real Betis

San Diego FC has secured the signing of experienced DR Congo striker Cedric Bakambu on a free transfer after his departure from Real Betis. The 35-year-old forward inked a deal running through the 2026 MLS season, with options extending into 2027 and 2028, aiming to strengthen the club’s attack as they chase a spot in the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs.

Experienced Forward Joins MLS Side

Bakambu's arrival in California marks the next chapter following his stint in Spain’s La Liga. Fresh off playing three matches for DR Congo at the 2026 World Cup, where his national team reached the Round of 32 in their debut tournament appearance, Bakambu brings a wealth of international experience to San Diego FC.

Club Praises the Forward’s Accomplishments

"Cedric brings an incredible level of experience and proven quality to San Diego FC," said sporting director Tyler Heaps. "He has built an outstanding career competing at the highest levels in Europe and internationally, and his ability to consistently find the back of the net has been a defining part of his game. He understands what it takes to perform on the biggest stages and brings a winning mentality that will be extremely valuable to our group."

Heaps also expressed excitement about welcoming Bakambu and his family to the club, anticipating the striker’s impact on the field.

Proven Goal Scorer Adds Firepower

Since breaking through professionally at Sochaux, Bakambu has scored 191 goals and provided 49 assists across 492 appearances. His club career includes time at Villarreal, Marseille, Olympiacos, and Galatasaray. On the international stage, he has netted 21 goals in 72 caps for DR Congo and competed in four Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.

His addition strengthens a frontline already featuring Anders Dreyer, Marcus Ingvartsen, and fellow 2026 World Cup participant Elias Achouri.

Playoff Push Gains Momentum

San Diego FC currently sit eighth in the Western Conference with 30 points as they aim for a second consecutive appearance in the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs. Integrating Bakambu quickly into the team’s attack is vital for maintaining their momentum during the crucial final stretch of the regular season.
