Ryanair Flight Emergency: Window Detaches Mid-Air

A Ryanair flight from Greece to Germany was forced into an emergency return after a passenger window detached mid-air, leaving one man partially hanging out of the aircraft before fellow travelers dragged him back inside.

The drama unfolded shortly after takeoff from Thessaloniki on the flight to Memmingen, Germany. Most passengers were asleep when a loud bang shattered the quiet.

“There was a noise, like a tire bursting,” a woman on board told Radio Thessaloniki, quoted by AFP. “We immediately realised there had been a decompression. There were screams.”

Oxygen masks dropped. A sharp smell filled the cabin. In the chaos, one man — a tourist from Serbia — found the top half of his body outside the aircraft, his head and shoulders pulled toward the gaping window.

“Fortunately, he hadn't taken off his seat belt,” the passenger said. That belt, and the people around him, likely saved his life. Those seated nearby grabbed him and hauled him back into the cabin.

The Serbian tourist was later hospitalized with friction burns but was otherwise in good condition, according to authorities.

Greek media reported that the incident occurred while the plane was flying over North Macedonia. Local reports said a piece of debris from one of the aircraft’s engines had broken off and smashed into the window, causing it to fail.

Ryanair confirmed the serious mid-air incident but said the crew managed to bring the situation under control.

The airline said in a statement that the flight “returned to Thessaloniki shortly after takeoff when a passenger window detached during the flight. The aircraft landed normally and the passengers returned to the terminal.”

No other injuries were reported. Once back on the ground, passengers were disembarked and later transferred to a replacement aircraft, which completed the journey to Memmingen, the Irish carrier said.

What began as a routine short-haul hop across Europe ended with a stark reminder of how quickly a flight can turn, and how thin the margin can be between disaster and escape.
