Rotherham United Sign Defender Sonny Aljofree

Rotherham United have moved to bolster their defence with the signing of Manchester United academy graduate Sonny Aljofree on a two-year deal, with an option for a further 12 months.

It is a significant step for the 22-year-old, who leaves Old Trafford without a senior appearance but with a reputation quietly built in the background. He arrives in South Yorkshire as a versatile defender, comfortable at centre-back and right-back, and with a grounding in one of the most demanding youth systems in the country.

Aljofree was part of the Manchester United side that lifted the FA Youth Cup in 2021-22, a competition that has long served as a barometer for emerging talent. While some of his team-mates pushed straight towards the first team, his path took a different route, through the less glamorous but often more telling test of senior football in the lower leagues.

Spells at Altrincham, Accrington Stanley and, most recently, Notts County have given him a taste of the reality he now joins full-time: tight pitches, physical battles, and the need to learn quickly or be exposed. Those loans did not bring headlines, but they brought minutes, and for a young defender, minutes matter more.

Rotherham already know what they are getting. Aljofree has been on trial with the Millers during pre-season, training with the squad and playing his way into this contract rather than simply arriving on reputation. That familiarity should shorten his bedding-in period and sharpen his chances of featuring early.

There is also a family thread running through the move. He is the son of former Plymouth Argyle defender Hasney Aljofree, a player who carved out a solid career in the Football League. The name is not new to long-time watchers of the EFL; now it belongs to a new generation, in a new shirt, trying to make its own mark.
