Rodri Opens Up on Real Madrid's Summer Bid Before Choosing Barcelona

Barcelona midfielder and Spain captain Rodri revealed how Real Madrid aggressively pursued him during the summer transfer window. In a chat with El Partidazo de COPE, he explained that his choice to join Camp Nou was driven purely by tactical reasons.

Real Madrid Went All Out for Rodri

After Spain's World Cup win, Rodri discussed the intense transfer activity surrounding him. The 30-year-old, after deciding to leave his previous club, faced offers from some of Europe's biggest teams. Eventually, he made a €76.5 million move to Barcelona, signing a four-year deal.

Respectful Approach from Real Madrid

Rodri dismissed rumors that Real Madrid showed little interest. Instead, he praised their conduct, saying their representatives were very enthusiastic and presented top-tier proposals. This respectful behavior made his decision harder.

"Madrid showed interest from the very first moment," Rodri said. "Their behavior was exemplary and the proposals were about going all in for the player. I spoke with people there who conveyed enthusiasm and desire for me to go there."

Tactical Fit Led Rodri to Barcelona

Despite the strong pursuit by Madrid, Rodri emphasized that footballing style and tactical compatibility influenced his choice. He felt his positional understanding matched Barcelona's philosophy and its young, emerging talent. Leading this youthful squad also appealed to him as a senior figure.

"It was a footballing decision about where I believed I could develop best," Rodri said. "It was about how I relate to the game and the vision of a generation that will give people a lot to talk about at Barca. Zero sentimental issues, zero money issues, just football."

Rodri Anchors Barcelona's Midfield

Since debuting in La Liga against Athletic Bilbao, Rodri has focused on helping Barcelona chase trophies. With World Cup, Champions League, and Ballon d'Or titles to his name, the midfielder aims to lead the team to domestic dominance. His calm presence and precise passing form the foundation of Barcelona's midfield as they enter a challenging season.
