Rodri Shares Private Call with Jose Mourinho After Choosing Barcelona Over Real Madrid

Rodrigo, the high-profile signing for Barcelona, has revealed details about a personal phone call he had with Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho before finalizing his move to Catalonia. The Spanish midfielder was courted intensely by both Spanish giants following his successful time at Manchester City under Pep Guardiola.

A Tough Decision Between Spain's Top Clubs

After thriving at Manchester City, the 30-year-old midfielder became the focus of a fierce competition between two of Spain’s biggest clubs. Rodri disclosed that Mourinho contacted him directly to share his vision for the player at the Santiago Bernabeu. Although surprised that the content of this conversation became public, Rodri respected the approach and the manager's effort.

Respectful Rejection of Real Madrid

Rodri appreciated the interest from Real Madrid but said his commitment lay with Barcelona’s project. He also maintained professional respect for Mourinho given his status in football. When questioned about the specifics, Rodri chose not to reveal private details but acknowledged Mourinho’s desire to have him join.

"I don’t think it’s his place to reveal a private conversation, but obviously he expressed his desire for me to go and what I could contribute to the team," Rodri told Mundo Deportivo. "The treatment was very good. When I made the decision I also called him to thank him for the interest and the treatment. I think he’s a fantastic coach; he’s already proven that wherever he’s gone during his successful spells, and Real Madrid is going to be a tough rival in this league."

Staying Focused Amid Transfer Rumors

During the transfer period, rumors surfaced about political links possibly affecting Real Madrid's pursuit of Rodri, specifically involving presidential candidate Enrique Riquelme. Rodri dismissed these distractions, explaining that he remained focused on his role with the Spanish national team, particularly during the World Cup, which he described as his most important achievement so far.

"Honestly, I lived on the sidelines of all this because it happened, if I remember correctly, in the World Cup and I was focused with my national team on achieving what is today the most important milestone I have achieved," he stated.

A New Chapter at Barcelona

Ultimately, Rodri’s desire to join Barcelona outweighed offers and personal appeals from Real Madrid. His arrival marks a key moment for the club as they aim to regain control in Spain and across Europe. Known for his game management and defensive awareness, Rodri brings qualities Barcelona believes are essential for their future plans. With Real Madrid remaining their main rivals, Rodri will soon face Mourinho’s team on the pitch after turning down their offer.
