South Korea Names Former Spain Coach Robert Moreno as Interim Manager Amidst World Cup Fallout

The Korea Football Association has appointed former Spain head coach Robert Moreno as the interim manager of the South Korean national team. This move follows the resignation of Hong Myung-bo, who stepped down after South Korea’s disappointing group-stage exit at the World Cup held in North America this past June.

Moreno, 48, becomes the first Spaniard to manage South Korea’s national side. His appointment came after an open search for a new head coach, aiming to steady the squad amid recent setbacks. Last month, police conducted raids on the association’s headquarters linked to controversial hiring decisions made by Hong for the 2024 season. Additionally, the KFA issued a public apology following allegations about providing sexual entertainment to foreign referees, intensifying the organization’s challenges.

Moreno’s Coaching Journey and Challenges

Before stepping into this role, Moreno served as assistant to Luis Enrique during their time with Spain’s national team. He temporarily took charge when Enrique left in 2019 due to personal reasons, though their professional relationship later soured with accusations of disloyalty from Enrique ahead of Euro 2020.

More recently, Moreno faced claims from Russian media that he used artificial intelligence tools while managing Sochi, a position he held until September 2025. Moreno firmly denied these accusations in a letter to Spanish newspaper Marca, stating:

"I have never used ChatGPT or any AI to prepare matches, decide line-ups, or choose players. That is completely false."

He emphasized that all decisions are made collaboratively with his coaching staff, highlighting his expertise in data and video analysis as key factors in his career development.

Moreno’s immediate responsibilities include overseeing friendly matches at home against Ecuador and Uruguay in September. October will see fixtures against Venezuela and Uzbekistan, with potential additional games slated for November. The Asian Cup, set to take place in Saudi Arabia from January 7 to February 5, represents a crucial test for Moreno and the team.
