Rio Ngumoha's Transfer Collapse: Liverpool and Bayern Munich

Rio Ngumoha’s proposed switch from Liverpool to Bayern Munich has dramatically fallen apart, just days after reports of a full verbal agreement between the teenager and the German giants.

The 17-year-old winger, one of the few positives in Liverpool’s grim 2025/26 campaign, had emerged as a “secret candidate” for Bayern, who are scouring the market for a wide player to compete with Luis Díaz. Vincent Kompany, eager to add pace and unpredictability to his left flank, had already seen Bayern miss out on Anthony Gordon after his £69m move to Barcelona.

Ngumoha, signed by Liverpool from Chelsea as a prodigious talent, finally broke through last season. In a side that often looked flat and short of ideas, his direct running and fearlessness on the ball gave Anfield something to cling to. Many around the club felt Arne Slot underused him; under new head coach Andoni Iraola, there was – and still is – a strong expectation that he could become a central figure in a more aggressive, front-foot system.

Bayern's Interest

Bayern tried to test that belief.

Respected reporter David Ornstein first revealed that the Bundesliga club were actively exploring a move, identifying Ngumoha as their primary target for the left side. Bayern were fully aware of Liverpool’s stance: the player was not for sale, and the plan on Merseyside was to strengthen the attack, not dismantle it.

Even so, the story quickly escalated. German journalist Florian Plettenberg then reported that Bayern had pushed ahead, holding talks with Ngumoha’s camp for weeks. By Tuesday, 26 May, they had, according to Plettenberg, reached a full verbal agreement with the player and his representatives. Kompany had personally spoken to the 17-year-old and given the green light for the deal.

For Bayern, Ngumoha had become an “absolute priority” as back-up to Díaz, part of a broader push that also included their pursuit of Gordon. The plan was clear: secure a young, high-ceiling winger who could grow into a long-term starter while adding immediate depth.

Deal Collapse

Then the move hit the wall.

Plettenberg reported that the deal “collapsed” on Thursday – at least for now. No agreement had ever been struck between the clubs, and Liverpool’s hard line has not shifted. Bayern, who are also working on potential deals for other targets such as Brown and Saibari, must now decide whether to revive the Ngumoha chase or walk away.

For Liverpool, the collapse is significant. Internally, there is a strong belief that Ngumoha could “explode” next season, sparing the club a major outlay on another wide forward. Talks over a new contract have already been floated, and Iraola’s arrival only sharpens the focus on how best to harness the youngster’s talent.

The episode underlines two things: Bayern’s determination to refresh their attack with youthful quality, and Liverpool’s refusal to cash in on one of their brightest prospects just as he stands on the brink of something bigger.

The verbal agreement may have vanished. The tug-of-war over Rio Ngumoha’s future has not.
