Enzo Fernandez wants Manchester City. Badly.

Sources close to the midfielder have told TEAMtalk the Chelsea star is very keen on making the move to the Etihad this summer, with a deal believed to be possible at around £100million – £20m short of Chelsea’s current asking price.

The Argentina international, signed by Chelsea from Benfica for £107m in 2023 and now a key figure at Stamford Bridge, is understood to see joining Enzo Maresca’s side as the ideal next step in his career. City have tracked his situation and are now actively exploring whether they can strike a deal at that revised valuation.

There is a catch. And it’s a big one.

City’s push for Fernandez is expected to happen only if Rodri leaves, with Barcelona still in talks over a move to Camp Nou. That domino has to fall before the Premier League champions fully commit to Chelsea’s midfielder.

City are also closing in on Monaco’s Ayyoub Bouaddi in a deal worth over £85m, but that move sits on a separate track. Their interest in Fernandez remains live and, crucially, unaffected.

Chelsea, though, are not prepared to let this drag.

The London club have made their stance crystal clear to City: submit a formal bid soon or the chance to sign Fernandez will be taken off the table. The message from Stamford Bridge is that pre-season comes first, and they will not tolerate a long, messy saga hanging over their new era under Xabi Alonso.

Chelsea want clarity, not noise

Inside Chelsea, there is a strong desire to avoid weeks of speculation that could unsettle the dressing room at a time when Alonso is trying to shape his squad and stamp his ideas on the team. With the new campaign fast approaching, the club want a definitive answer – stay or go – so they can plan accordingly.

Those familiar with the talks insist Chelsea are still standing firm on their valuation. Even so, there is an acknowledgement that £100m remains a huge sum for a player who has delivered consistently for both club and country since arriving in England.

Now the decision rests with City.

Pep Guardiola’s side are weighing up whether Fernandez’s quality and ceiling justify matching that compromise figure. The midfielder’s ability to dictate play, press aggressively and operate at the highest level is not in doubt. The question in Manchester is whether he is worth triggering a nine-figure outlay at this stage of the window, especially with other business already in motion.

Clock ticking on City’s move

Both clubs feel the pressure of the calendar.

Chelsea do not want lingering uncertainty around one of their central players while they fine-tune the squad for Alonso. City, on the other hand, must decide quickly if they are prepared to go to around £100m before the market moves on and other options close.

Right now, the ball is firmly at City’s feet. If they step up with a formal offer in the region of that £100m mark in the coming days, people close to the negotiations believe an agreement is there to be done.

If they hesitate, the door will almost certainly slam shut. City’s interest would cool, Chelsea would pull the plug, and Fernandez would remain in west London to continue as a cornerstone of Alonso’s project.

The next few days will tell whether this becomes one of the window’s defining transfers or just another what-if in a restless summer.
