Reiss Nelson's Arsenal Future: West Ham Pursues Championship Move

Reiss Nelson’s Arsenal career is edging towards its crossroads, and it might just run through the Championship.

Arsenal and West Ham are in active talks over a deal for the 26-year-old winger, who has returned to north London after back-to-back loan spells at Brentford and Fulham but does not feature in Mikel Arteta’s plans for the new season.

West Ham have moved first. Eager to add top-flight quality to a squad gearing up for a promotion push from the Championship, they have approached Arsenal to test the waters over Nelson’s availability. The response from the Emirates has been clear: this is a move the Gunners would welcome.

Nelson is into the final year of his contract, and Arsenal view this window as the right moment to cash in. Club figures have given encouragement to West Ham as negotiations continue over the structure and conditions of a potential deal.

One major question remains. Does Nelson actually want to drop down a division?

So far, that answer is not obvious. Personal terms have not yet been discussed, and the winger is still weighing up his options. Interest in him is not limited to England. Several clubs have made their admiration known over the summer, including Benfica.

The Portuguese club are now managed by Marco Silva, the coach who brought Nelson to Fulham two seasons ago and trusted him in the Premier League. That existing relationship gives Benfica a natural pull, and their presence in the race complicates West Ham’s hopes of landing a marquee wide player for their campaign.

Arsenal’s preference is clear: a permanent sale. They want a clean break rather than another short-term fix. Even so, enquiries over another loan have arrived, and the club have protected themselves. If they do sanction a temporary move, Arsenal hold an option to extend Nelson’s deal by 12 months to guard against losing him for nothing.

Nelson is not the only senior player who could be heading for the exit before the window closes.

Arsenal are also open to offers for Gabriel Jesus and Fabio Vieira as they reshape the squad around Arteta’s core. Jesus, once the headline arrival from Manchester City, is available for up to £20 million. He has been linked with Napoli, but as things stand Arsenal have not received a formal approach from the Italian champions.

Vieira, another who has struggled to secure a consistent role, is also on the market as the club look to trim numbers and raise funds.

There is movement in the goalkeeping department too. Arsenal are working to secure a loan move for young goalkeeper Tommy Setford, with the priority being regular first-team football this season to accelerate his development.

For Nelson, the stakes are more immediate. At 26, with pedigree in the Premier League and suitors at home and abroad, the next decision will define the shape of his career. West Ham can offer a central role in a promotion chase. Benfica can offer European nights and a familiar coach.

Arsenal, for their part, have made their stance known. The next move belongs to the player.
