Referee Mathilde Demoncay Concussed in Pre-Season Friendly Incident
A pre-season friendly in eastern France turned ugly on Saturday when referee Mathilde Demoncay suffered a concussion after being knocked to the ground while trying to break up a mass confrontation between players.
The 26-year-old official was in charge of a warm-up match between French side Metz and Dutch club Fortuna Sittard at Schlossberg Stadium in Forbach when tempers boiled over late in the first half.
Melee erupts beneath a sign of irony
The flashpoint came in the 40th minute. What began as a routine tussle over a shirt pull between two opponents escalated quickly as teammates from both sides rushed in, bodies colliding and voices raised.
Demoncay stepped into the chaos to separate the players. In the scramble she was knocked off balance and crashed heavily to the turf, as captured on video shared across social media. The scene unfolded directly in front of a large pitchside banner carrying a message football has been trying to hammer home for years: “Respect the referee.”
For several minutes, that message felt painfully hollow.
The referee stayed down, clutching her arm, as assistant referees, security staff and medical personnel sprinted onto the pitch. The scuffle broke up around her, leaving Demoncay at the centre of a suddenly subdued stadium.
Concussed but determined to continue
After treatment on the field, Demoncay managed to get back to her feet. Play eventually resumed, with the referee moving to the touchline to continue as an assistant for the remainder of the half, a decision that underlined both her determination and the surreal nature of the occasion.
She did not return after the interval. Another assistant stepped in to take over her duties, with later reports confirming she had suffered a concussion in the incident.
On the pitch, Metz went on to win the match 3-1 as both clubs continued preparations for their new seasons. Off it, the fallout from the confrontation overshadowed the scoreline.
Fortuna Sittard’s match report on their official website referred to the clash and Demoncay’s injury only as a “remarkable moment,” offering no further detail. Metz did not mention the incident at all in their coverage of the game.
A friendly fixture, a pre-season run-out, a banner demanding respect – and a referee leaving with a concussion. For a sport still wrestling with how it protects its officials, the images from Forbach will linger far longer than the result.
