Real Madrid Open to Tchouameni Sale as Manchester United Circle
Aurelien Tchouameni was supposed to be part of Real Madrid’s next great spine. Now, he might be the sacrifice that funds it.
According to reports in England, Real Madrid are prepared to sell the France international to Manchester United this summer, even as new head coach Jose Mourinho pushes to keep him. The calculation in the boardroom is cold: cash in on Tchouameni to launch an audacious move for Manchester City lynchpin Rodri.
Mourinho, only just in the door at the Bernabeu, had earmarked Tchouameni as a cornerstone of his midfield. The hierarchy appear to have other ideas.
From Untouchable to Expendable
Tchouameni has been central to Madrid’s recent success. Four years in white have brought him a Champions League winners’ medal and a La Liga title, his physical presence and positional discipline giving balance to a side stacked with attacking talent.
But his status has shifted. A clash with teammate Federico Valverde last season damaged his standing inside the club, and the 26-year-old is no longer viewed as untouchable. For a Madrid board always looking to refresh, that change in perception matters.
The opportunity to move for Rodri has sharpened minds. If landing the City midfielder is even remotely possible, Madrid know they will need serious funds. Tchouameni, signed for a substantial fee in 2022, is now seen as the cleanest way to generate them.
United Sense Their Moment
Manchester United are watching closely. They have already started a significant midfield overhaul, bringing in Youri Tielemans for £35 million and Andrey Santos for £50 million, reshaping the core of a side that has badly needed control and coherence in the centre of the pitch.
Casemiro’s departure and a serious injury to Manuel Ugarte forced United’s hand. Tielemans offers the passing range and tempo-setting they have lacked behind Bruno Fernandes. Santos, a dynamic, defensively-minded presence, is one for both the present and the future, expected to grow alongside Kobbie Mainoo.
Yet United’s recruitment team have long identified Tchouameni as the dream final piece. A fee of around £68 million – close to what Madrid paid Monaco two years ago – is understood to be enough to get Madrid to the table. At that price, the deal would effectively reset the books for Los Blancos and free them to chase Rodri.
The symmetry is striking. Madrid originally signed Tchouameni to replace Casemiro, who left for Old Trafford. Now United want the Frenchman to fill the same vacancy in Manchester, turning a previous Madrid solution into their own.
The Missing Pillar at Old Trafford
On the pitch, the logic is obvious. United have spent years without a true holding midfielder who can both shield the defence and knit play together from deep. Casemiro brought bite and experience but not long-term stability. The structure around him never fully convinced.
Tchouameni changes that picture. He offers a defensive platform Tielemans and Fernandes can trust, winning duels, covering ground, and allowing the creators ahead of him to stay higher and more aggressive. With Santos and Mainoo developing behind and alongside him, United’s double pivot of the future begins to take shape.
Drop Tchouameni into an increasingly settled back four at Old Trafford and the whole team looks different. The gaps between the lines shrink. The transitions become cleaner. The chaos that has so often defined United’s midfield in recent years starts to fade.
For Madrid, losing a player of his profile is a risk. For United, it could be the move that finally drags their midfield into the modern elite. The question now is simple: will Madrid really trade a proven anchor for the chance to land Rodri, and will United move quickly enough to seize a rare opening at the top end of the market?
