Raul Rosas Jr. Reflects on Frightening UFC Vegas 121 Finish Against Raoni Barcelos
At UFC Vegas 121, Raul Rosas Jr. faced off against veteran Raoni Barcelos in a bout that ended with a shocking moment. The 21-year-old Rosas secured his first UFC main event win by knocking out Barcelos in the fifth round. The finish, officially classified as a slam knockout, took a terrifying turn when Barcelos appeared to lose consciousness during the takedown before hitting the mat.
Barcelos, 39, was stretchered out and taken to the hospital but was later reported stable, alert, responsive, and moving all limbs, according to the UFC.
Rosas’ Initial Reaction
"For a second, I didn’t know if he died, to be honest," Rosas shared on The Ariel Helwani Show. "When I calmed down a little and checked if he was breathing, I saw he was, so I thought, OK, he’s not dead for sure."
He added that this realization brought some peace, though he spent time praying for Barcelos to wake up and reunite with his family.
The Impact of the Moment
The unsettling ending cast a shadow over what was otherwise an outstanding fight. Rosas acknowledged the fear involved but still felt pride in his performance, despite the difficult finish.
"It was scary because of that, but yes, I was happy about my performance," he said. "He’ll probably feel sad about the result, but I’m sure he’ll be happy about the fight since we both gave everything to win."
Rosas mentioned he has reached out to Barcelos but hasn’t heard back. Barcelos regained consciousness shortly after the fight and statements from him and his coaches have been released since.
A Grueling Battle and Confusion Over the Finish
The match was a tough five-round contest between two bantamweight contenders. Rosas remains puzzled about how the fight concluded.
"From my side, I didn’t hit his head," Rosas said. "You can see it on the video. I even watched the replay. I want to know if he remembers anything and what he can say about it. He knows better than anyone."
Rosas recalled the fourth round as a brief chance to catch his breath while Barcelos was on his back trying to secure a submission. He observed Barcelos gasping for air and appearing wobbly after that round, likely due to exhaustion.
Heading into the final round, Rosas increased his pressure and pace. He thinks Barcelos’ body may have simply shut down from fatigue.
The Fight-Ending Sequence
Rosas described landing a light punch to Barcelos’ head just before attempting the decisive takedown, which his corner had suggested.
"I don’t know if the punch did it," Rosas explained. "When I grabbed him, he felt weak, like his body was done. I felt confident I would finish him."
He took Barcelos down and sensed victory, only to realize afterward that Barcelos had apparently lost consciousness before hitting the mat.
Adding to the frustration, Barcelos was ahead on all judges' scorecards and seemed likely to win by decision had the fight gone the distance.
Scorecard Before the Stoppage
- Judge 1: Barcelos leading
- Judge 2: Barcelos leading
- Judge 3: Barcelos leading
- Notable: Fourth round scored 10-8 in favor of Barcelos by one judge
Rosas on Fighting Under Pressure
"I was down going into the fifth, but my mindset was different," Rosas said. "I thought Round 1 was mine, Round 2 was close, and he owned Rounds 3 and 4. I figured it might be 2-2, but if it went to the judges, he’d probably win because of the strong fourth round."
He wanted to avoid leaving the outcome to doubt and decided he had to finish the fight in the last round.
