Radek Vitek Joins Middlesbrough for Record Fee

Radek Vitek has shut the Old Trafford door behind him. Middlesbrough have opened another – and paid a record fee to do it.

The 21-year-old goalkeeper has joined Boro on a permanent deal worth up to £14million, a move that makes him the most expensive goalkeeper in Championship history. Leicester City's outlay on Mads Hermansen and Southampton's move for Daniel Peretz had set the previous benchmark; Vitek has just smashed it.

United were never going to let him walk away without a safety net. The deal is loaded with clauses: a buy-back option, matching rights, and a 35 per cent sell-on clause. If his career explodes on Teesside, Old Trafford will feel the benefit in more ways than one.

This is a transfer driven by ambition as much as by money. From the start of the summer, Vitek made it plain he would not accept life as a back-up. With Senne Lammens established as Manchester United’s first-choice goalkeeper and Karl Dalow brought in to be the No.2, the pathway was blocked.

Vitek refused to stand in line.

After United’s opening pre-season game against Wrexham, he didn’t bother to dress his intentions up. He spoke openly about wanting to go somewhere he could be a No.1. Not someday. Now. His mind was already moving beyond Manchester.

United, for their part, chose not to fight that tide. They rated him highly enough to protect their interests in any future move, but not enough to guarantee him the starting shirt he craved. The compromise was simple: let him go, but keep a hand on the lever if he takes off.

Middlesbrough offer exactly what he has been chasing – a stage and serious stakes. Michael Carrick’s side pushed hard for promotion last season and expect to be back in that conversation again. It is a demanding environment for any young goalkeeper, never mind one still shaping his reputation in English football.

Vitek does not arrive as a complete unknown. Since joining United’s academy from Sigma Olomouc in 2020, he has ticked off each rung of the ladder. He was the ever-present in United’s triumphant 2021/22 FA Youth Cup campaign, then stepped up to the Under-21s, before testing himself away from the comfort of Carrington.

Loans have been his education. Accrington Stanley in early 2024, a six-month spell that exposed him to the realities of senior football. A season-long stint at Austrian side Blau-Weiß Linz for 2024/25, another productive chapter in unfamiliar surroundings. Crucially, he has already felt the pace and physicality of the Championship with Bristol City, a spell that alerted clubs across the division to his potential.

At 6ft 6in, he looks every inch the modern goalkeeper: imposing frame, big reach, presence in the box. Middlesbrough are not paying record money for a project they hope might come good in three years. They are buying a goalkeeper they believe can grow with a promotion-chasing side and handle the pressure that comes with that badge.

For United, this is the end of a carefully managed development plan and the start of a long watch. If Vitek becomes the goalkeeper he believes he can be, they have given themselves every possible route to bring him back.

For Middlesbrough, it is bolder than that. It is a statement that their push for the Premier League will be built not just on goals at one end, but on a young Czech goalkeeper determined to prove he should never have been anyone’s No.2.
