Qatar's Madibo Visits Kone After Accident

On the eve of Qatar’s final Group A game, Julen Lopetegui’s thoughts were not on Bosnia and Herzegovina, nor on permutations or tactics. They were with Assim Madibo, who spent Tuesday in Vancouver at the bedside of the man whose leg he accidentally broke.

Madibo flew to Canada’s base to visit Ismael Kone, the Canada midfielder who suffered a fractured leg in last week’s 6-0 demolition of Qatar. The tackle, mistimed and clumsy rather than malicious, earned Madibo a red card and left him inconsolable on the pitch. Kone, now recovering from successful surgery, is expected to miss at least five months of action for club and country, including his Serie A duties with Sassuolo.

“It has been very tough for him,” Lopetegui said of Madibo on Tuesday. The Qatar coach stressed the remorse of his midfielder and the accidental nature of the challenge. “We wish him [Kone] all the best to recover as soon as possible. Now in the current moment Madibo is in Vancouver visiting Kone because he was very, very affected by this injury – it was never his intention. It was a very clear accident. We wish him all the best.”

The image of Madibo, distraught as Kone received treatment, has lingered longer than any detail of the scoreline. His decision to travel to Vancouver underlines how heavily the incident has weighed on him, and it has become the emotional backdrop to Qatar’s closing group fixture.

On the pitch, the consequences are stark. Madibo is suspended for Wednesday’s meeting with Bosnia and Herzegovina in Seattle, leaving Lopetegui without one of his key midfielders. Homam Ahmed will also miss out, having been sent off in the same bruising defeat to Canada. Two red cards, one broken leg, and a squad suddenly stripped of experience and balance at precisely the moment it needs calm.

For Lopetegui, the human cost has taken precedence over the sporting damage. Qatar’s World Cup campaign has already absorbed its heaviest blow; the next 90 minutes in Seattle will play out under the shadow of a challenge neither player intended and both will remember for a long time.
