Philippe Coutinho Joins Neymar at Santos with Deal Until Season's End

Philippe Coutinho has inked a contract with Santos until the end of the current season, rejoining his former Brazil teammate Neymar. The move follows Coutinho's departure from Vasco da Gama.

A Long-Awaited Reunion at Vila Belmiro

Santos have pulled off a major signing by bringing in the 34-year-old midfielder, who will now link up again with his close friend and national team colleague Neymar. This partnership brings together two of Brazil’s top talents who developed through the national youth teams and shared the stage during the 2018 World Cup.

Coutinho’s arrival comes as he searches for a fresh start after a challenging phase. After leaving his boyhood club Vasco da Gama earlier this year—citing mental exhaustion and the need to step back—he was without a team until now.

From Anfield Star to Global Journeyman

Coutinho’s career has seen him shine in Europe’s elite leagues, especially at Liverpool. Joining from Inter Milan in 2013, he became the creative force for the Reds under Brendan Rodgers and Jurgen Klopp, scoring 54 goals and assisting 44 times in 201 appearances. His excellent form led to a £142 million transfer to Barcelona in January 2018, arriving just a year after Neymar left for Paris Saint-Germain.

Though his time at Barcelona was mixed, Coutinho won consecutive La Liga titles and enjoyed a successful loan at Bayern Munich, where he lifted the Champions League trophy in 2020. Notably, he scored twice in Bayern’s stunning 8-2 quarter-final win against Barcelona that same year.

Return to the Premier League and Final Move Back to Brazil

Attempting to revive his career, Coutinho returned to England with Aston Villa—initially on loan in January 2022 before making the transfer permanent in the summer. While he showed glimpses of his talent under Steven Gerrard, consistent starting opportunities were limited.

Despite having a contract running until 2026, Villa and Vasco agreed to an early deal allowing Coutinho to move back to Brazil a year sooner. His stint at Vasco saw 124 appearances and 22 goals, but the return didn’t fully meet expectations, leading to his free-agent status until Santos secured him.

Santos Aim Higher with Coutinho

Santos are counting on Coutinho’s experience to boost their campaign. Currently sitting 10th in the Brasileirao standings, they hope his skills can help climb the table as the season progresses.
