Olivia Moultrie’s Breakout Season Cut Short by ACL Injury
Portland Thorns star Olivia Moultrie has seen a breakout season cut brutally short, with the club confirming Tuesday that the 20-year-old midfielder has been placed on the season-ending injury list after tearing the ACL in her right knee.

“Heartbroken doesn’t even begin to sum up all of the feelings right now,” she wrote on Instagram. “To be taken away from something you love more than anything is a feeling I never wanted to experience. I know there is a reason this path has been chosen for me and I can’t promise everything but I can promise I’ll be back and I’ll be better.”
The words read like a vow as much as a reflection.

Inside the club, there is no doubt about how Moultrie will attack the long road back.
“Olivia is one of the most driven players I have been around, and she will use that drive during her recovery and rehabilitation,” Thorns president and general manager Jeff Agoos said in a statement. “She has our full support and every resource this club can put behind her.”
Portland will need to reconfigure its midfield without a player who had become a key link between lines, someone equally capable of threading passes and arriving late in the box to finish moves. Her absence changes the texture of the Thorns’ season, tactically and emotionally.
USWNT Plans Thrown Off Course
The impact stretches well beyond Providence Park.
Moultrie has already made 18 appearances for the United States, scoring five times, and was rapidly cementing her place in the national team picture. She was named U.S. Soccer Young Player of the Year in 2023, a nod to both her current quality and her ceiling.
