Nottingham Forest have made a major statement in the market, landing Côte d’Ivoire centre-back Ousmane Diomande from Sporting in a deal reported to be worth around £34.2m.
The 22-year-old, already seasoned at the sharp end of European football, has signed a four-year contract at the City Ground, with Forest holding an option for a further year. It is the kind of move that signals intent, not just survival.
“He has fantastic experience for a defender of his age. Playing a crucial role in title-winning teams and going into the latter stages of the Champions League puts him in a great position to integrate well here at Forest,” said Forest’s chief football officer, George Syrianos, underlining exactly why the club have pushed hard to get this one done.
Diomande’s journey has been anything but gentle. He broke through in Denmark with FC Midtjylland, then accelerated his rise after joining Sporting in January 2023. In a short span, he racked up 132 appearances in all competitions for the Portuguese side, anchoring a defence that mixed domestic dominance with European ambition.
Last season, he stood firm in Sporting’s Champions League run, starting both legs of their quarter-final defeat by Arsenal. On the international stage, he played the full 90 minutes in Côte d’Ivoire’s World Cup group-stage win over Curaçao, a performance that helped cement his reputation as one of the most promising defenders of his generation.
Forest are betting that experience, compressed into such a young frame, can harden their back line for the long grind ahead.
