Northern Ireland Call Up Teenagers Graham and O'Neill for Friendlies
Michael O'Neill has turned to the next generation. Two uncapped teenagers, Braidan Graham and Ceadach O'Neill, have been handed their first senior Northern Ireland call-ups for June friendlies against Guinea and France.
Graham, just 18, has been prolific for Everton's Under-21s this season, hitting 12 goals in 18 appearances and forcing his way into first-team thoughts at Goodison Park. He made the bench for Everton's trip to Nottingham Forest in December, though he is still waiting for a senior debut under David Moyes.
O'Neill, also 18, has carved out a similar reputation at Arsenal. A standout in the club's underage ranks, he has already tasted the senior matchday environment, named on the bench for FA Cup ties against Wigan Athletic and Southampton.
For Michael O'Neill, freshly tied down to a new contract that keeps him in charge of Northern Ireland until 2032, this is a statement about where he wants to take the team. Established names are missing. Opportunity has opened up.
Defensive Absentees
The defensive absentees are significant. Sunderland centre-back Dan Ballard will miss both matches through injury, stripping Northern Ireland of one of their most reliable performers at the back. Paddy McNair, a mainstay for so long, is also unavailable after helping Hull City clinch promotion to the Premier League. Portsmouth defender Terry Devlin joins the casualty list.
Eoin Toal, who sat out Bolton's League One play-off final win over Stockport County, remains sidelined as well, while midfield options are thinned by the absence of George Saville and Brad Lyons.
There is at least one familiar name returning. Ethan Galbraith, the Swansea City midfielder, has been included despite not featuring since Northern Ireland's World Cup play-off defeat by Italy at the end of March. His selection underlines O'Neill's faith in his quality and temperament, even without recent minutes.
Liverpool teenager Kieran Morrison, another of the new wave, keeps his place in the squad and will jostle for space alongside the fresh faces of Graham and Ceadach O'Neill.

Northern Ireland meet Guinea in Spain on 4 May, a useful tune-up before a far sterner examination against France in Lille on 8 June – their final outing before the World Cup. For Graham and O'Neill, it is a sudden, sharp step into the senior spotlight. For Michael O'Neill, it is the first real glimpse of what his Northern Ireland might look like all the way through to 2032.
