Northampton Town Sign Nathan Opoku from Leicester City
Northampton Town have moved to sharpen their attack with the signing of striker Nathan Opoku from Leicester City for an undisclosed fee.
The 25-year-old Ghanaian has agreed a three-year contract at Sixfields, a long-term commitment that underlines how highly the Cobblers rate him.
Opoku’s route to League One is anything but ordinary. He joined Leicester in 2023 from Syracuse University in the United States, swapping college soccer for a Premier League club’s books. Leicester immediately sent him to their Belgian sister side OH Leuven, where he hit five goals and picked up his first taste of European professional football.
The next step was a test of his mettle in the EFL. Last season he led the line for Newport County in League Two, scoring six times in 30 league appearances and finishing as the Exiles’ top scorer.
Manager's Perspective
Cobblers boss Chris Hogg believes that unconventional path is exactly what makes Opoku ready now.
“He has had a different journey to most players but that has helped him gain a good breadth of knowledge and experience and he is an excellent age,” Hogg told the club’s website.
The Northampton manager highlighted both pedigree and practicality: three years under Leicester’s umbrella, minutes in Belgium, and a full campaign in League Two mean Opoku arrives knowing the demands of the English lower leagues.
“He has spent the last three years at Leicester City and enjoyed loan spells both in Europe and last season in League Two so he knows the level and he has scored goals at this level,” Hogg said.
Northampton have not rushed into this one. Hogg made it clear the club have been following the forward closely.
“We have tracked Nathan for a while so we know all about him, we have done our homework and we know he is hardworking, has an excellent attitude and is a good person, he is a good character and a good player.”
Now the homework is done. The deal is signed. The question is simple: can Opoku turn that winding journey into goals that drive Northampton’s next step up the ladder?
