Nicolo Tresoldi Postpones Decision on International Future Between Germany and Italy Until After 2027 U21 Euros

Club Brugge forward Nicolo Tresoldi has decided to wait until after the 2027 U21 European Championship before committing to a senior national team. The 22-year-old attacker, currently impressing with the German U21 squad, is torn between representing his birth country Italy or the nation where he developed as a footballer, Germany.

A Heart Split in Two

The battle for Tresoldi’s international allegiance will continue for some time. Despite strong interest from both the German Football Association (DFB) and the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), he will stick with the German U21s through the 2027 Euros before making his final decision. Talking to Sky Germany, Tresoldi revealed how tough this choice is, saying his feelings are evenly divided between the two nations. "My heart is 50:50. Both countries mean a lot to me," he shared.

Discussions with Jürgen Klopp

The stakes grew higher when Jürgen Klopp, now managing the German national team, personally contacted Tresoldi. Klopp values the striker’s Champions League performances and they have had meaningful talks about his future. Tresoldi praised Klopp’s understanding and empathy, describing their conversations as more like father and son than typical coach-player talks. He added, "He said that the door is always open for me."

Roberto Mancini’s Efforts for Italy

Italy’s head coach Roberto Mancini is also trying to sway Tresoldi to play for his country of birth. Tresoldi told that he responded honestly to Mancini, just as he did with Klopp. Born in Sardinia and raised partly in Italy before moving to Germany at 13, Tresoldi feels a strong connection to Italy beyond heritage. "It's not just that only my father comes from Italy. I was also born there, I grew up there," he explained. He also qualifies for Argentina through his mother, though his decision currently revolves around Europe.

Committed to Germany U21 for Now

For the moment, Tresoldi remains dedicated to the German U21 project under coach Antonio Di Salvo. He expressed pride in wearing the German jersey and eagerness to compete in the upcoming European Championship. The striker is expected to return to action soon in an important qualifier against Latvia U21, providing a boost to Germany’s campaign. "I wear the Germany jersey with pride, I’m very happy to be here. I still want to play in the European Championship here. After that, we will see how things progress," he stated.
