Neymar Explains Surprise Absence as Santos Face Heavy Copa do Brasil Defeat to Palmeiras

Neymar has spoken out about his unexpected omission from the Santos squad during their 3-0 defeat against rivals Palmeiras in the Copa do Brasil first leg. The 34-year-old forward was left out entirely, raising questions after Santos struggled at Nubank Parque.

Flaco Lopez Leads Palmeiras to Victory

Santos were overwhelmed in the match as Palmeiras took advantage of Neymar’s absence. Flaco Lopez opened the scoring with a powerful long-range shot. Shortly before halftime, Andreas Pereira converted a loose ball into the net. Lopez then sealed the win with a precise second-half header from an Agustin Giay cross, giving Palmeiras a solid 3-0 lead going into the second leg.

Neymar Explains the Coaching Choice

The No. 10 had initially been named in the preliminary traveling squad but was dropped from the final lineup. Neymar dismissed any rumors about injury and said the decision was purely tactical due to a busy schedule. In a message on Instagram he stated, "I was available to play! It was a decision by the coaching staff, due to the sequence of games we have."

Fatigue Prompts Squad Rotation

Resting Neymar came after a demanding run where he played full matches consecutively against Macara, Vasco da Gama, and Mirassol. With Neymar out and Gabigol only entering in the second half, Santos struggled to break through Palmeiras’ defense and created few scoring chances. Palmeiras almost increased their lead when Giay and Mauricio missed clear one-on-one chances against Santos’ goalkeeper.

Upcoming Challenges for Santos

Santos must quickly prepare for a tough away derby against Corinthians in the Campeonato Brasileiro this weekend. Following that, they face the challenge of overturning the three-goal deficit at home against Palmeiras in the Copa do Brasil return leg, and then travel to face Internacional. Neymar’s return will be vital to revive Santos’ attack and keep their cup hopes alive.
