Newcastle United Sign Lukas Hornicek for €30.6m from Braga

Newcastle United have moved decisively in the market, sealing the signing of highly rated goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek from SC Braga in a deal worth €30.578 million.

The Czech international has signed a five-year contract running until June 2031, underlining the club’s long-term faith in a player viewed as one of the most promising young keepers in Europe.

Unveiled on Tyneside this morning, Hornicek cut the figure of a man who understands the size of the step he has just taken. The last few days, he admitted, have been an “emotional rollercoaster” from the moment he first learned of Newcastle’s interest to finally walking through the doors at St. James’ Park.

He spoke of a “brilliant opportunity in a new league” and of how quickly the club had made him feel at home. From the first moment, he said, he felt the warmth of Newcastle United, with staff and teammates helping him settle into unfamiliar surroundings.

That warmth will soon be replaced by the raw noise of matchday. Hornicek already knows what awaits him: 52,000 fans packed into St. James’ Park, driving their team on and demanding everything from those in black and white. He “can’t wait” to step out in front of them. Few new signings do.

This is not a keeper plucked from obscurity. Hornicek joined SC Braga in the 2019/20 season from FK Pardubice’s youth system and climbed rapidly through the Portuguese club’s academy. By 2021/22 he had forced his way into the first team, then stayed there.

From that breakthrough onwards, he became a central figure for the Minho side, racking up 88 appearances and establishing himself as a dependable last line of defence. Braga trusted him. Now Newcastle have paid heavily to do the same.

A new league, a new country, a new level of scrutiny. For Hornicek, the next chapter starts under the floodlights of St. James’ Park.
