Newcastle United's Unexpected Managerial Shift: German Matthias Jaissle to Replace Eddie Howe

Just weeks ahead of the new Premier League season, Newcastle United is reportedly undergoing an unexpected shift in management. Long-standing coach Eddie Howe seems ready to step down immediately, only 22 days before kickoff.

Matthias Jaissle Emerges as Leading Candidate

The 38-year-old German coach Matthias Jaissle is said to be in advanced talks to take over the managerial role. Jaissle made his name at RB Salzburg and later took charge at Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia in 2023, with a contract lasting until 2027. Ending this deal appears manageable since both clubs are primarily owned by the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF).

Eddie Howe’s Impact and Departure Reasons

Howe has overseen a significant rise in Newcastle’s fortunes since 2021, guiding the team to qualify twice for the Champions League after a 20-year absence and clinching the League Cup in 2025. Despite this success, recent dissatisfaction around transfer dealings may have influenced Howe’s decision to leave.

He had already led the squad through three pre-season friendlies, including a convincing 4-1 win over Bristol City just days ago. Yet, reports suggest developments in the transfer market have soured his outlook. Newcastle is parting ways with key players Sandro Tonali, sold to Tottenham Hotspur for €108 million, and Anthony Gordon, heading to FC Barcelona. Captain Bruno Guimaraes might also exit, while the future of German international Nick Woltemade remains uncertain after a challenging debut season following his €75 million move from VfB Stuttgart.
