Newcastle United Faces Decision on Nick Woltemade Amid Dortmund Interest
Newcastle United are already staring at a huge call on Nick Woltemade, barely a year after making him their record signing.
The German striker arrived on Tyneside for £69 million and exploded out of the blocks, hitting four goals in his first five Premier League games and whipping up talk of a new talisman at St James’ Park. The hot streak didn’t last. By the end of his debut campaign he had eight goals and three assists from 33 league appearances – solid, but short of the fireworks many expected for that fee.
Jaissle’s Dilemma
This summer has brought change and uncertainty. New head coach Matthias Jaissle has spent pre-season probing for answers, using Woltemade both as a central striker and as a No. 10. The experiment has yet to catch fire. The 22-year-old has struggled to leave a mark in warm-up matches, and the questions around his role have only grown louder.
Now comes fresh pressure from Germany.
Sky Sports Germany report that Borussia Dortmund have made early contact with Newcastle over a possible move for Woltemade, sounding out the Magpies about taking him back to the Bundesliga.
Dortmund Circle, But Need to Sell First
Inside Dortmund, club officials have reportedly drawn up a small list of players who could depart before the window closes, with forward Fabio Silva among those considered saleable. Only once one of those names – and Silva in particular – is moved on are BVB expected to push ahead with a concrete move for Woltemade.
“According to our information, BVB has inquired (about Woltemade),” Sky Germany reported, noting that Dortmund made “some preliminary inquiries a few weeks ago about a potential transfer” for the Newcastle forward.
For now, it is a loan they are exploring, not a permanent deal. That detail matters. A season back in his home country could give Woltemade the reset he needs, allowing him to rebuild rhythm, confidence and market value without Newcastle cutting ties with a player they committed so heavily to just last summer.
Newcastle Hold the Cards – For Now
At this stage, there is no sign Newcastle have accepted Dortmund’s proposal, or even decided they are open to a loan. The talks remain at a very early stage, with Silva’s unresolved future the first hurdle before anything can move forward.
So the club stand at a crossroads. Keep faith with a £69 million investment and back Jaissle to unlock the player they thought they were buying? Or send Woltemade to Dortmund for a year, gambling that time away from the Premier League will turn a stuttering start into the striker Newcastle believed would lead their line for years?
