Newcastle and Liverpool Compete for Andrei Ratiu Transfer

Newcastle United and Liverpool are on collision course again in the transfer market, this time over Rayo Vallecano right-back Andrei Ratiu, according to Marca.

Eddie Howe has made defensive reinforcements a priority at St James’ Park. Ratiu, a Romania international with a sharp attacking edge, has moved high on Newcastle’s list as they look to add energy and end product down the right.

The problem? Liverpool like him too.

Newcastle are still smarting from being beaten to Spanish winger Victor Munoz earlier in the summer. They believed a deal with Osasuna was close, only for Liverpool to swoop in late and walk away with the attacker. His dribbling and passing give him the profile of a modern wide creator, the kind of outlet Newcastle have been searching for to stretch games and support their forwards.

He also relishes the less glamorous work. Interceptions and defensive interventions form a key part of his game, making him a genuine two-way option rather than a converted winger asked to learn the defensive craft on the job.

That blend explains the crowd forming around him. For Newcastle, the equation is clear: win this race and they land a ready-made right-sided weapon; lose it, and the narrative of being outmanoeuvred by rivals deepens.

There is a significant obstacle. Newcastle will not have European football at St James’ Park next season, a factor that could tilt the balance toward Liverpool or any other club able to offer continental competition.
