Newcastle Set to Finalize €60m Deal for Johan Manzambi
Newcastle United are on the brink of landing one of Europe’s most sought-after young midfielders, with a €60m agreement in place with Freiburg for 20-year-old Johan Manzambi, according to Sky Germany.
The deal between the clubs is described as done, the fee settled and the structure agreed. Newcastle are now working through the final details with Manzambi himself, who is expected to sign a long-term contract and become a centrepiece of their next phase of squad building.
Aston Villa had tried to muscle in. Amadou Onana’s ACL injury at the 2026 FIFA World Cup forced them into the market for a high-end replacement, and Manzambi quickly moved towards the top of their list. The chase never quite turned into a straight bidding war, though; Newcastle moved early, pushed hard, and now stand in pole position to secure his signature.
It is not hard to see why he attracted that level of attention. Manzambi has been one of the breakout performers of this summer’s tournament, scoring three goals and supplying two assists for Switzerland. He carried that form straight from an impressive Bundesliga campaign, where he produced five goals and four assists in 27 league appearances for Freiburg.
Those numbers, for a 20-year-old midfielder, command a premium. €60m is exactly that.
For now, Switzerland are having to do without him. Manzambi is sidelined at the tournament, unavailable as his country prepares for a quarter-final showdown with Argentina after their penalty shootout victory over Colombia. His absence is a blow for the national team; for Newcastle, it is a reminder of the level of player they are about to bring into St James’ Park.
If the final details fall into place as expected, the next time Manzambi steps onto a pitch, he may be wearing black and white in the Premier League, carrying the weight of a €60m bet on his rapid rise.
