Myanmar Dominates Philippines with 4-1 Victory in Tarlac
TARLAC, Philippines — Under heavy rain and heavier pressure, the Philippines’ ASEAN Championship campaign took a major hit as Myanmar stormed to a ruthless 4-1 win at New Clark City Stadium in Capas on Tuesday.
It was not just a defeat. It was their first home loss since falling to Iran in World Cup qualifying two years ago, and it arrived with a jolt.
Myanmar seize control early
On a slick surface and in swirling rain, Myanmar settled quickest. The hosts did not.
Seven minutes in, the warning became reality. From a corner, Soe Moe Kyaw’s initial effort was blocked by Daisuke Sato inside the area, but the Philippines failed to clear and Kyaw Min Oo reacted first, nodding in the rebound to silence the home crowd.
The goal rattled the Philippines. Myanmar sensed it.
Just before the half-hour, Maung Maung Lwin split the defense with a perfectly judged through ball, carving straight through the middle. Than Paing raced on to it, steadying himself before sliding a composed finish past Quincy Kammeraad to make it 2-0 and leave the hosts staring at a long night.
New Clark City stirred three minutes later. Jarvey Gayoso tumbled in the box and the referee pointed to the spot, offering what looked like a way back. The roar grew, then died. After a VAR review, the decision was overturned and the penalty wiped away, the referee ruling there was no foul. The chance evaporated with it.
A flicker of hope, then collapse
The Philippines returned from the break chasing the game and, for a brief spell, the momentum swung.
In the 68th minute, they finally broke through. Javier Mariona threaded a pass into Gayoso, who finished to cut Myanmar’s lead to 2-1 and ignite the 3,104 fans who had braved the storm. For the first time all night, Myanmar looked uncomfortable. The noise rose, tackles bit harder, and belief crept back into the stands.
It did not last.
As the hosts pushed higher, gaps opened. Myanmar punished every one of them.
In the 81st minute, Win Naing Tun restored the two-goal cushion, finishing clinically to sap the life from the comeback talk. Two minutes later, Than Paing struck again, completing his brace and sealing a statement victory that delivered Myanmar their first three points of the tournament after their opening loss to Malaysia.
The final whistle left the Philippines with the scoreboard stark and unforgiving: 4-1, at home, and their path to a second straight ASEAN Championship knockout stage suddenly steep and uncertain.
