Mykhailo Mudryk Speaks Out After Tottenham Debut as De Zerbi Highlights Fitness Concerns
Mykhailo Mudryk shared his excitement after finally making his debut for Tottenham Hotspur following a long suspension. The winger appeared in Saturday's Premier League clash against Nottingham Forest, marking his first competitive game since November 2024.
Mudryk came off the bench in the 74th minute during a goalless draw at The City Ground. Having joined Spurs on loan from Chelsea late in the transfer window, he made an immediate impression in his brief time on the pitch. Soon after, Mudryk posted on Instagram, "No feeling better to be back on the pitch. First minutes in new colours. Thanks for support." His message reflected relief and joy after overcoming his doping-related suspension.
De Zerbi’s Caution on Mudryk’s Fitness
Despite Mudryk's promising cameo, manager Roberto De Zerbi was clear that the winger is not yet ready to be a regular starter. He emphasized that Mudryk must regain peak physical condition before contributing consistently. "He’s not ready yet," De Zerbi said during his post-match interview. "He’s working to reach the best physical condition. He needs time, he needs work." The coach pointed out the physical demands of his tactical system, suggesting patience is necessary.
Tough Competition for Attacking Roles
De Zerbi also addressed the competition for places on the left wing, where Mudryk plays. Mathys Tel is another contender, but both young players still have room to grow. The manager noted, "In that position, we have Mathys Tel, big potential. But also Mathys takes too many wrong decisions, and Mudryk. So, two big players, two big potential players." He underlined the challenge Tottenham faces in scoring goals, comparing options like Marmoush and Solanke who have proven more clinical.
Upcoming Fixtures and Mudryk’s Role
Mudryk will aim to build on his brief appearance by improving his fitness and sharpness ahead of a demanding schedule. Spurs host Everton in the Premier League on September 12, then travel to Liverpool for the EFL Cup Round of 16 three days later. Following that, they face Aston Villa at home on September 19. With such a busy period, Tottenham's medical team will likely manage Mudryk’s playing time carefully to avoid setbacks.
