Jose Mourinho Shows Frustration with Officials Using Printed Images After Madrid Derby Loss
Jose Mourinho expressed strong dissatisfaction with the officiating following Real Madrid's 2-1 loss to Atletico Madrid in their LaLiga derby. The defeat leaves Real further behind in the title race, now six points behind leaders Barcelona.
After the match, Mourinho publicly displayed printed images highlighting what he saw as controversial incidents during the game. He argued that Atletico should have had two players sent off in the first half, which would have changed the dynamics of the match.
"We can skip the press conference because the story of the match is right here," Mourinho said while showing screenshots and photos. "Those were two clear red cards. Considering we played most of the game 11 against 10, imagine how it would have been playing 11 against nine for 50 minutes."
Mourinho praised his players despite the setback, acknowledging their effort and character during the match.
"I’ll just limit myself to hugging my players who gave everything, showed great class and character in the first half, setting us up well for the second," he added.
The manager also suggested that the referees’ decisions might have been honest mistakes rather than intentional errors.
"I want to believe these are simply mistakes, just as coaches and players make mistakes," Mourinho explained. "I liked my team as a unit. Even when it became tough to regain possession in the second half, I appreciated their pride and determination. I'm not disappointed in my players."
Diego Simeone Responds to Mourinho’s Criticism
Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone chose not to engage in the dispute over refereeing after the victory. Instead, he called on managers to be mindful of their public comments.
"We are in a privileged position with a lot of public attention, whether it's Mourinho, [Hansi] Flick, [Manuel] Pellegrini, me, or anyone else," Simeone said. "We need to be careful about what we say. We must respect others, the referees, our colleagues, because when someone crosses the line of respect, it’s not right."
