Mohamed Salah Joins Trabzonspor: A New Chapter Begins
Mohamed Salah’s next chapter will not be in England, Saudi Arabia or Major League Soccer. It will be on Turkey’s Black Sea coast, in the claret and blue of Trabzonspor.
The Egypt international has signed a two-year contract with the seven-time Turkish champions, committing to play in Turkiye next season after leaving Liverpool as a free agent at the end of the last campaign.
A superstar’s arrival
Salah flew into Istanbul on Wednesday to complete the move and was met by a surging crowd of Trabzonspor supporters, desperate to catch a first glimpse of one of the defining forwards of his generation. Flares, flags, camera phones in the air – the kind of welcome usually reserved for club legends, not yet-to-be unveiled signings.
The formalities will be completed later on Thursday, when the club stages his official signing ceremony.
End of an era at Liverpool
At 34, Salah leaves behind a monumental legacy at Liverpool. He arrived on Merseyside as a highly rated wide forward; he departs as one of the Premier League’s greats.
Across 442 appearances, he scored 257 goals, a staggering return that helped fuel a modern golden era for the club. With Salah at the heart of it, Liverpool collected two league titles and the Champions League among eight major honours, and he forced his way into any serious conversation about the greatest players ever to wear the shirt.
He still had a year remaining on his Liverpool contract, but in March he made public his intention to depart after what was, by his standards, a flat campaign. He finished with 12 goals and endured a public falling out with then-coach Arne Slot, a rupture that underlined the sense that a cycle had run its course.
Once that decision was out, the only question was where he would go. Now there is an answer.
A new stage, familiar expectations
Trabzonspor finished third in the Turkish league last season and have long seen themselves as the club best placed to challenge the dominance of Istanbul’s giants. Landing Salah is a statement – of ambition, of pulling power, and of a desire to turn third place into something more.
For Salah, it is a different landscape but a familiar burden. He arrives as the marquee name, the player expected to lift standards, drag games his way, and turn a passionate fan base into believers in something bigger.
The numbers he produced in England will be almost impossible to replicate. The aura he brings to Trabzon, though, is exactly what the club have paid for.
