Milan's Firm Stance on Leao Amid Fenerbahce's Bid

AC Milan have flown to the other side of the world to start the second phase of their pre-season, but the biggest story around the Rossoneri is still orbiting Europe’s transfer market.

The squad touched down in Perth, Western Australia, for a behind-closed-doors friendly against Perth Glory, with one notable name yet to join the group: Rafael Leao. The Portuguese forward is due to link up with his teammates in Australia after his World Cup exploits, walking straight into the eye of a storm over his future.

Fenerbahce push, Milan resist

Fenerbahce have moved from interest to action. According to Sport Mediaset, the Turkish club have lodged an official bid and even dispatched director Cihan Kamer to Italy to try and force a breakthrough. Their proposal is structured and aggressive: a package worth up to €42 million, built on a €5m loan fee now, a €35m obligation to buy next summer, and €2m in bonuses.

Milan’s response has been blunt. No loans. No complicated formulas. A straight €50m or nothing.

The stance is not new. The Serie A side have already made it clear to Galatasaray and Benfica that only a permanent sale will be entertained. The reason sits in plain sight: they need cash. Having already spent over €100m to bring in Goncalo Ramos and Mario Gila, Milan require fresh funds to keep reshaping the squad.

So the numbers are on the table. Fenerbahce are trying to negotiate around them. Milan are trying to hold the line.

Amorim’s message: team first, noise later

Into this tension stepped Ruben Amorim. Speaking in Perth, the Milan coach chose his words carefully but delivered them with steel.

“He is our player until anything changes, the team comes first,” he said, as quoted by Gianluca Di Marzio. “It is not too complicated, for me the team is the most important thing.

“I will speak with Rafael, with [Goncalo] Ramos, with [Alexis] Saelemaekers, with all the players returning from the World Cup to explain what we will do. I know there is a lot of speculation about some of our players, but they remain ours until anything changes.”

The message was clear: speculation stays outside the dressing room door. Leao may be at the centre of a high-stakes tug-of-war, but Amorim will not allow one player’s future to shape Milan’s preparation.

A lucrative escape route

For Leao, the temptation is obvious. Reports suggest he is ready to accept Fenerbahce’s offer of a contract worth around €12m per season, roughly double his current salary at San Siro. It is the kind of deal that can tilt a player’s thinking, even when they are a key figure at one of Europe’s traditional giants.

So the scenario is stark. Milan want a clean €50m sale. Fenerbahce are pushing a structured €42m package. The player stands to land a life-changing wage if the clubs can find common ground.

For now, they have not.

Australia today, uncertainty tomorrow

While directors argue over clauses and instalments, Amorim’s reality is more immediate. Milan face Perth Glory on Saturday in a game designed to build fitness and sharpen ideas before the new campaign. The coach will use the tour to lay down his principles, integrate Ramos and Mario Gila, and speak face to face with his returning internationals.

Leao will step into that environment with his future unresolved, his suitcase in Australia and his name on a contract offer in Turkey.

Negotiations between Milan and Fenerbahce are expected to rumble on in the coming days. The forward may train under the Perth sun, pull on the red and black in a friendly, and still walk away from San Siro before the window shuts.

For Milan, the question is no longer whether Leao has suitors. It is whether they are willing to bend on their valuation, or risk starting the season with their most coveted asset knowing that, at any moment, the next offer could finally hit the number that pries him away.
