Middlesbrough are closing in on a £7million deal for Tottenham defender Ashley Phillips, a move that underlines both their promotion intent and Spurs’ hard-nosed summer reset.
The Championship club will pay an initial £7m fee, with further add-ons potentially to follow, and have also agreed to a sell-on clause that keeps Tottenham tied to the 21-year-old’s future. Phillips is set to undergo a medical ahead of the switch to the Riverside Stadium.

Kim Hellberg’s side have chased Phillips all summer. Now they are on the verge of prising a second player from Tottenham in the same window, after landing striker Will Lankshear last month in a club-record deal that could climb to £20m.

For a 21-year-old, Phillips arrives with serious mileage in England’s second tier. He has already passed the 100-game mark in the Championship, spread across spells with Blackburn, Plymouth and Stoke.

Tottenham snapped him up from Blackburn in 2023 for £2.5m, with Rovers inserting a 15 per cent clause on any profit Spurs made from a future sale. That clause will now be triggered, with Phillips moving on after just a year in north London.

For Tottenham, this is another step in a summer defined by ruthless squad management and aggressive spending. The England youth international joins Lankshear, Alfie Devine and Tynan Thompson on the list of academy products leaving permanently in this window.
Spurs have been determined to squeeze maximum value from departures. With Phillips’ sale, they are edging towards the £100m mark in outgoing transfer fees.
They need it. The club have already committed around £237m on new signings this summer and still expect to add two or three more players before the window closes next month.
