Michael Carrick Stays Hopeful as Manchester United Draw 2-2 with Everton
Manchester United's visit to Everton ended in a 2-2 draw, leaving the Red Devils frustrated but their manager Michael Carrick still hopeful about the team's progress.
Bright Spots Despite Setbacks
Several positives emerged from the match. Striker Benjamin Sesko netted his first goal of the season after recovering from a shin injury that delayed his start. Midfielder Kobbie Mainoo continued to impress and appeared unaffected by his difficult World Cup experience, showing strong mental resilience similar to goalkeeper Senne Lammens. Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford returned to the squad with renewed determination.
Yet, there are concerns. After a Europe-based pre-season intended to prime the team, United have dropped five points in their opening three Premier League matches. Each game has seen them concede twice, including against two newly promoted sides and an Everton team dealing with off-field turmoil.
Upcoming Challenges
Next up for Manchester United is a Champions League clash with Azerbaijan’s Sabah FK, followed by a crucial derby against Manchester City. The schedule poses a tough test just as pressure mounts on Carrick and his squad.
Carrick’s Take on the Season Start
"It's not that bad, you know," Carrick said about the early campaign. "We were so close to taking all three points today. That’s football. There were small things we can improve, but we’ll be fine."
Former United forward Wayne Rooney, analyzing the match for BBC Sport, agreed, describing the performance as controlled despite the result. He praised the midfield trio and recognized the quality of Everton’s two goals, calling them well-taken strikes.
"They’ll be very frustrated they didn’t win given how they played," Rooney added.
Carrick admitted the result felt more like a loss considering the effort made to gain the lead twice during the game.
Defensive Issues Must Be Addressed
United controlled significant parts of the game and led twice, but Everton equalized through two long-range strikes—one by Tyrique George and the other a dramatic late goal from debutant Ainsley Maitland-Niles. It was the first time an Everton player scored from outside the penalty area on their Premier League debut.
No single player was blamed for the goals, though Lammens might have done better on the first. Still, Carrick acknowledged conceding twice each match isn’t sustainable if United want to win regularly.
"The mentality is there," Carrick said. "They were two good strikes, but we need to concede fewer goals to improve our chances. We have to get better as a team."
Luke Shaw Impresses Amid Transfer Questions
Questions linger over United's transfer window activity, especially the lack of a new striker to support Sesko. Notably, Joshua Zirkzee remained on the bench despite a potential loan move to Everton falling through due to no replacement being signed for United.
The club also chose not to sign left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri from Manchester City, aiming to avoid putting pressure on regular starter Luke Shaw.
Shaw stood out against Everton, frequently pushing forward and delivering the cross for Sesko’s late goal. Rooney praised Shaw’s defensive leadership and attacking threat, highlighting his growing connection with Rashford.
"He was really good, both going forward and defending," Rooney said. "He looked more dangerous today because of his link-up with Marcus."
Carrick hopes Rashford’s second-half substitution due to an issue won’t be serious, as the partnership between him and Shaw is a key asset.
Former teammate Ashley Young noted on Match of the Day that Shaw’s style reminded him of when he first joined United, with quick overlaps and dangerous deliveries putting opposition defenses under pressure.
Testing Times Ahead
Carrick faces a demanding stretch with four games in 11 days, the busiest period since becoming United manager. Managing player fitness and rotation will be critical, especially regarding Shaw’s involvement and whether Zirkzee can claim a meaningful role. Sesko may be favored to start against Sabah, but the derby against City could shift priorities.
These dilemmas reflect the challenges of a season that could include 60 matches. For now, Carrick’s "not that bad" assessment holds, but expectations at Manchester United remain high, and the margin for error will soon narrow.
