Mexx Meerdink Shines with Two Goals in Netherlands’ 2-1 Win Over Serbia
Mexx Meerdink, the 23-year-old striker from AZ, had a memorable full international debut, scoring twice to lead the Netherlands to a 2-1 victory over Serbia in the UEFA Nations League at Rajko Mitic Stadium.
Called into the starting lineup after Brian Brobbey’s injury, Meerdink opened the scoring with a composed penalty in the first half. Serbia's Luka Jović leveled early in the second half, but Meerdink sealed the win with a precise sliding finish in the 78th minute, assisted by Guus Til.
A Childhood Dream Realized
After the match, Meerdink shared his excitement about the rapid progression from being a substitute against Germany to becoming the hero in Belgrade. He admitted feeling some pressure before taking the penalty following Crysencio Summerville's foul but stayed calm to convert it successfully.
"It is a childhood dream," Meerdink said. "Everything happened so quickly this week. I felt a little pressure before the penalty, but to score twice and help the team win feels great."
Praise for Work Ethic and Teamplay
Manager Xavi Hernández highlighted Meerdink’s defensive effort and constant pressing, which helped disrupt Serbia’s attacks. As the main attacking figure, Meerdink connected well with teammates like Joey Veerman and Guus Til throughout the game.
Xavi confirmed Meerdink is now the second-choice penalty taker behind Cody Gakpo and commended the youngster for earning the trust of the coaching staff.
Looking Ahead to Greece Clash
Meerdink and the Dutch squad will focus on their upcoming Nations League match against group leaders Greece in Thessaloniki on Thursday. The forward hopes to maintain his impressive form and secure a regular starting role under Xavi.
The return fixture between Serbia and the Netherlands will take place in Eindhoven on Sunday, where Meerdink aims to continue his goal-scoring streak for Oranje.
