Matty Cash Aims for UEFA Super Cup Triumph as Aston Villa Prepares to Face Paris Saint-Germain
Matty Cash is confident that Aston Villa can build on last season’s success by defeating Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup. The defender called PSG the best team worldwide but stressed that Unai Emery’s squad is eager to add another trophy at the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig.
European Champions Meet for Prestigious Trophy
This Wednesday, Aston Villa will appear in their second UEFA Super Cup, taking on the reigning Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain. Villa secured their place by winning the Europa League with a 3-0 victory over Freiburg, clinching their first European title in 44 years. Meanwhile, PSG retained both their domestic league crown and Champions League title, edging out Arsenal on penalties in May’s final.
Cash Recognizes PSG's Strength
Cash sees the Super Cup as a perfect chance to finish what the team started last season. Speaking on the club’s official site, the Poland international praised PSG: "It's massive. The manager mentioned recently that even though the season is over, the Super Cup lets us finish the work from last season." He described PSG as "by far the best team in the world right now" but remains hopeful Villa can offer a strong challenge.
"When we played them in the Champions League, we gave them a real test. Villa Park was electric that night. We hope to bring that energy to Austria and fight hard. This is a special match for us and another shot at winning silverware."
Manager Spurs Winning Mindset
This encounter is their third meeting after PSG narrowly won their Champions League quarter-final tie 5-4 on aggregate in the 2024-25 season. Emery’s record in the Super Cup isn’t favorable, having lost all three previous appearances with Sevilla and Villarreal. Still, Cash credits Emery for instilling a winning mentality in the Villa squad:
"Since the manager arrived, he’s shown us what it means to win and how to get there. Last year we talked about lifting trophies, and for several seasons we’ve consistently finished in the top four to six."
He added that Aston Villa aims to stay among Europe’s elite clubs: "We set high standards competing in Europe and domestically. Being successful means always pushing ourselves to those levels and staying there once we reach them."
