Mason Mount's Injury Scare in Manchester United's Pre-Season Match
Mason Mount handed Manchester United and Michael Carrick an untimely scare in Gothenburg, limping out of a lively pre-season meeting with Paris Saint-Germain after just 20 minutes.
The midfielder, one of United’s sharpest performers this summer, signalled discomfort early on and was withdrawn with the new season less than a fortnight away. Tyler Fletcher came on in his place, while Mount jogged from the pitch and spoke briefly with medical staff on the touchline. United will now wait for assessment to determine whether this was a precaution or the latest setback in a stop-start Old Trafford career.
The disruption did nothing to help Carrick’s side, who were already chasing the game. Ibrahim Mbaye had stunned United with a goal inside two minutes, punishing slack defending to give PSG an immediate advantage and silence the early optimism in the stands.
United, though, have shown this summer that they can respond when stung. They did it again here. Just past the half-hour, Amad Diallo wriggled free down the flank and picked his moment, sliding a clever ball into Bryan Mbeumo. The forward took a touch, stayed calm and drilled a low finish into the bottom corner to make it 1-1 in the 32nd minute.
The equaliser reflected United’s broader pre-season story: uneven at times, but sprinkled with moments of promise. Carrick’s men have already been on a mini-tour of moods and margins – a flat 1-0 defeat to Wrexham, a ruthless 5-0 dismantling of Rosenborg, and a controlled 2-1 win over Atletico Madrid. PSG in Sweden was the latest stop on a schedule designed to harden legs and minds before the real business starts.
Yet the afternoon brought another worrying twist after the break. Veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton, so often the steadying presence behind a rotating cast of defenders, had to come off with what looked like a hamstring problem. Dermot Mee was thrown in, another young player asked to grow up quickly in United colours.
For Carrick, the timing of these knocks is brutal. The 2026/27 Premier League season opens on August 22, with newly-promoted Hull City first up, and Mount’s history does not invite calm. Since his £55million move from Chelsea in the summer of 2023, injuries have repeatedly cut into his rhythm and reputation. Across three league campaigns, he has managed only 25 Premier League starts for United – a number that jars with both his price tag and his own ambitions.
This pre-season had felt different for him. While several team-mates filtered back late after World Cup duty, Mount seized the extra minutes. He has been busy, influential, and often at the heart of United’s best passages in these friendlies, determined to force his way into Carrick’s first XI when the curtain lifts on the new campaign.
His growing influence has not just been technical. In Norway, he took the captain’s armband and embraced the responsibility, talking openly about leading by example, about running, pressing, and setting standards for a young squad. On and off the pitch, he has tried to look like a pillar rather than a luxury.
Competition around him is fierce. United have sunk a combined £87million into strengthening central midfield again, bringing in Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa. Both arrive expecting minutes, not cameos. Both arrive as threats to anyone who cannot stay fit or cannot sustain form.
That is what makes this latest twinge so unwelcome. Mount left the field under his own steam, no stretcher, no obvious collapse, which will offer some encouragement. Carrick still chose not to gamble. With the season so close and the player’s record so fragile, he was never likely to.
United’s tour now moves on from Sweden to Ireland, where Leeds await on Wednesday night, before a trip to Wroclaw to face AC Milan next Saturday. The games keep coming. So do the decisions.
Carrick has seen enough from Mount this summer to know what he can bring when healthy. The question, as ever with the midfielder in a United shirt, is whether his body will finally let him show it over a full season.
