Maresca's Premier League Debut: A Thrilling Comeback for Manchester City

Enzo Maresca’s first Premier League afternoon as Manchester City manager had just about everything: control, frustration, risk, and finally, release.

Bournemouth led at the Etihad, City chased, and in stoppage time Josko Gvardiol turned an anxious opening day into a roar of vindication. On the touchline, Maresca and his staff exploded, a week of tactical tinkering and bold calls suddenly looking very smart.

Maresca’s verdict: “We deserved to win”

Maresca never felt his side were truly out of the game.

“To be honest, even in the first half we were good,” he told Sky Sports. “Before the goal we concede we didn’t concede one shot and had three or four clear chances to score. But then they scored the goal and it became a bit more difficult. But overall I think we deserved to win the game.”

City’s dominance of the ball eventually ground Bournemouth down.

“Second half they drop a little bit,” Maresca said. “Also because we kept the ball for most of the first half, so they run a lot. Second half they dropped a bit. It is a game that we don’t need to win in 90 minutes. It’s a game we probably deserve to win before.”

The pressure finally told. Marc Guehi struck late to level, then Gvardiol arrived in the 91st minute to complete the turnaround and ignite the stadium.

Guehi in midfield: a calculated gamble

One of the most striking features of Maresca’s first league lineup was Guehi starting in central midfield, away from his usual role in defence. It was not a whim.

“We are looking for solutions,” Maresca explained. “I knew Marc since he was at Palace. I really like him. I think that he can be a midfielder also. He can be a central defend stepping in or he can play as a midfielder like today.

“We tried this week the first few days a central defender stepping in, then the last two days as a midfielder and I think it was good.”

The Italian wants variety and unpredictability in his midfield structure, and he made it clear this is just the beginning.

“Again, we are looking for solutions. We need different solutions. Today was Marc in the middle. He showed he can be good there. He can give us more solutions in the future in case we need it. Again, we are going to try different things because it is a matter of being dynamic and try to surprise the opponent.”

Fitness issues and a search for balance up front

Maresca’s attacking options are not yet at full tilt. Several key forwards are still working back to peak condition after the summer.

“We have four or five players that are still not fit 100 percent,” he said. “The reason why is because they arrive late from the World Cup. Nico O’Reilly, Elliot, Erling and one or two more now I don’t remember, so we are just trying to find solutions.

“I think Antoine [Semenyo] was quite good. Erling, we can see that he is still not 100 percent but in any case he is still dangerous, so just try to do our best.”

That constant search for “solutions” is the thread running through Maresca’s early weeks in charge. He knows experimentation is a luxury managers rarely have in the Premier League. You have to win while you tweak.

“To win the game. That is the most difficult thing,” he admitted. “We visualize things and we see if they work. But at the same time you need to win games so it is not easy. Today I think we have been also lucky.”

Foden scare, Cherki’s spark, and the market

There was a brief scare when Phil Foden went straight down the tunnel after being substituted, but Maresca quickly played that down.

“He’s okay. He was one of the guys celebrating in the changing room, so maybe he needed the toilet!? I don’t know. I will ask!”

On the flanks, the absence of Savinho leaves City slightly light, and Maresca did not hide the fact that the final week of the transfer window could be significant.

“One more week [of transfer window], we will see what happens before the transfer window finishes.”

In the No. 10 role, Nico O’Reilly started, but it was Rayan Cherki who caught the eye after coming on in the second half.

“When he was on in the second half he did very well,” Maresca said. “He is a fantastic player. I love that kind of player like Rayan. He is going to be very, very good for us.”

As for reports that City have reached an agreement to sign Ayyoub Bouaddi, Maresca was blunt.

“Not yet. I will ask now, but nobody told me nothing.”

Gvardiol: “We need to enjoy”

For Gvardiol, the late winner carried extra weight. New season, new manager, new hierarchy in the dressing room after several departures. The Croatian defender understood the value of starting with a statement.

“Everyone is proud with the moment,” he said. “Especially because it is the opening game of this season and we know how important it is. Especially with all of the changes we had in the previous weeks. I think we need to enjoy. We deserved it and I’m happy about the three points.”

He knows the demands will not ease.

“Every game is important, especially here in England in the Premier League, the two cups plus the Champions League,” Gvardiol added. “I would say the most important thing is we won today and in five days there is another game. Crystal Palace away. Which is going to be difficult as well. We need to recover well, prepare right and be ready for every game now.”

One game in, one comeback complete, one new manager already living the full Premier League rollercoaster. The question now is whether City can turn this chaotic, emotional launch into a sustained charge under Maresca.
