Mbekezeli Mbokazi's Possible Return Boosts Chicago Fire for MLS Cup Playoffs
Mbekezeli Mbokazi’s season is no longer written off.
The Chicago Fire defender, who tore his thigh in late July and was initially ruled out for the rest of the year, is now on track for a possible return in time for the MLS Cup Playoffs in late November.
Speaking after the Fire’s 1-1 draw at the New York Red Bulls, coach Gregg Berhalter rowed back on his earlier assessment of the injury.
“I think the information I gave that he’s definitely out for the season was premature,” Berhalter admitted. “He’s in a rehab program now and he’s progressing. There’s no exact timeframe for when he’s going to be back, but there is a possibility it is before the end of the season.”
That shift in tone is significant. When Mbokazi went down in midsummer, the expectation was brutal but simple: his club campaign was over.
The timing could now transform Chicago’s outlook. Before the injury, Mbokazi had been a rock in the Fire back line, drawing widespread praise and earning a spot in the MLS All Star game. His composure, pace and timing in the tackle had turned him into one of the league’s standout young defenders.
His rise wasn’t limited to club football either. At the World Cup, Mbokazi was one of Bafana’s breakout stars, anchoring the defence as they reached the knockout phase for the first time in their history. His performances on the global stage underlined why Chicago had come to lean so heavily on him.
Then came the tear, and with it the fear that both club and country would have to cope without him for months.
Now the picture is more complicated. An earlier-than-expected return would be a major boost for the Fire as they eye a postseason run, but it offers no comfort to Bafana. They face two crucial AFCON qualifiers against Kenya on November 11 and 15, fixtures that fall just days before Mbokazi is likely to be ready for a competitive return to Chicago’s matchday squad.
For the national team, the calendar offers little room for compromise. For the Fire, it might just deliver their defensive pillar back in time for the games that define a season.
