Marco Rose Leads Bournemouth to 4-1 Victory Over St. Pauli

Marco Rose did not ease his way into life at Bournemouth. He ripped straight into it.

On a warm evening in Saalfelden, Austria, his new side came from behind to beat German club St. Pauli 4-1 in their opening pre-season outing, a scoreline that felt like a statement as much as a workout.

They had to respond first. Bournemouth fell behind in the first half, a reminder that this is a team still adjusting to new ideas and a new voice on the touchline. The reaction was sharp. Ben Gannon-Doak, Harold William, Daniel Jebbison and Bafode Diakite all found the net as the Cherries overpowered their opponents and ran away with it.

Rose, speaking to BBC Radio Solent afterwards, sounded satisfied rather than swept away by the margin of victory. Pleased, but already thinking about the next layer of work.

He talked about “many good things” and the value of finally having live footage to dissect, a first real look at how his principles translate from the training pitch to a match situation. This was his Bournemouth in public for the first time.

Most importantly for him, the identity looked familiar. “We wanted to be Bournemouth, and we wanted to be proactive,” he said. “I think that is what we saw today.” His side pressed, played on the front foot and kept asking questions of St. Pauli once they had wrestled control of the game.

There were subplots. Alex Scott, regularly linked with a move away from the south coast, featured and got minutes under his belt. Eli Junior Kroupi, another name hovering around the rumour mill, did not play, with Rose pointing to a lack of training rather than anything more dramatic.

The transfer noise around both was put to Rose directly. He batted it away. “I am not here to comment on any rumours or things like this,” he said, shutting that door firmly for now.

He was more open on the club’s pursuit of Benfica defender Antonio Silva. On that front, Rose did not bother with secrecy. He called Bournemouth’s interest “not a secret”, confirming that the Cherries are pushing to bring the highly rated centre-back to the Premier League.

“We want this player, the player wants to join us and the clubs are in talks – that's nothing new. Now we are waiting for him,” Rose added, a clear marker of intent for the rest of the window.

One emphatic win, one clear transfer target, and a first glimpse of a proactive Bournemouth under new management. Pre-season has only just begun, but Rose has already made it clear which direction he intends to drive this team.
