Manchester United’s search for a new left-back has taken a sharp turn towards Germany, with RB Leipzig defender David Raum emerging as a serious option after Newcastle United shut the door on any move for Lewis Hall.

United want fresh competition for Luke Shaw, whose contract at Old Trafford has entered its final year. Hall had been identified internally as a prime target, viewed as an ideal long-term option on the left, but Newcastle – already bruised by a series of high-profile departures – have made it clear he will not be leaving St James’ Park this summer.

That stance has forced United to pivot. The interest in Hall remains, but the focus of this window is shifting, and Raum now sits near the top of the list.

Raum ready to say yes

Jason Wilcox, United’s director of football, has all but conceded that Hall is out of reach for this window. Newcastle’s firm stance, shaped by their own squad rebuild and recent exits, has left little room for negotiation.

So the recruitment team is now expected to accelerate efforts for an alternative. Raum fits the brief. At 28, he would arrive with his prime years in full swing rather than still on the horizon, and his track record at the top level is already extensive.

The Germany international has been capped 39 times since 2021, a remarkable return that underlines his status in a fiercely competitive national setup. He has “been around the block,” as insiders put it, but without the sense that his best days are behind him.

One key figure at Old Trafford knows exactly what Raum would bring. United’s director of recruitment, who worked closely with him at RB Leipzig, has long been an admirer.

Back in 2024, he laid out the full package when asked about the defender’s rise: Raum had developed “brilliantly” over a two-year spell, established himself as a regular for club and country in his first Bundesliga season, and built a reputation as a quick, dynamic full-back with a fierce strike and serious threat from set pieces and crosses.

Those traits map neatly onto what United have lacked on the left whenever Shaw has been absent: consistent availability, aggressive running, and reliable delivery in the final third.

Now the question is no longer whether Raum suits United. It’s whether United move decisively enough, in these final weeks of the window, to turn long-standing admiration into a signing that reshapes their left flank for the battles to come.
