Manchester United Sign Young Goalkeeper Kit Margetson

Manchester United have added another young goalkeeper to their ranks, confirming the arrival of Kit Margetson from Swansea City while intensifying their push for Roma midfielder Manu Kone.

United move for Margetson – and a new generation in goal

Margetson, 19, joins Old Trafford after his contract with Swansea expired, with United agreeing a compensation package to reward the Championship club for developing him from Under-15 level through to the fringes of the first team.

This is not a kid plucked from obscurity. The Wales Under-21 international spent last season on loan at Cymru Premier side Connah’s Quay Nomads, where he kept 10 clean sheets in 34 appearances and played a key role in their qualification for European competition. It was his first taste of senior football, and he handled it.

He also carries a notable surname. Margetson is the son of Martyn Margetson, the former England and Swansea goalkeeper who now works as Wales’ goalkeeping coach. Kit followed his father into the position and into Swansea’s system, rising to the senior squad and earning a place on the first-team bench for a late-season fixture against Millwall in the 2024-25 campaign.

Both clubs confirmed the deal with near-identical sentiments. United described him as an “exciting young goalkeeper” and highlighted his European-qualifying campaign with Connah’s Quay, as well as his Wales youth caps and Under-21 debut against Belarus in March. Swansea underlined his long association with the club and his importance to Connah’s Quay’s push for Europe, before wishing him success at Old Trafford.

There is a minor discrepancy in age between the statements – United’s announcement refers to him as 19, Swansea’s as 20 – but both agree on the same trajectory: academy prospect, senior loan, now a move to one of the world’s biggest clubs.

Margetson becomes the second Welsh goalkeeper to sign for United this summer, following the free transfer arrival of Karl Darlow after his departure from Leeds. It points to a deliberate reshaping of the goalkeeping department, with competition and depth clearly a priority behind the established No 1.

Midfield rebuild: Kone in United’s sights

While the goalkeeping group evolves, the real noise around Old Trafford sits in midfield.

United have already brought in Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, two very different profiles to refresh the centre of the pitch. Now they are pushing for a third addition, and attention has turned firmly towards Manu Kone.

According to Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport, United have reached an agreement in principle on personal terms with the Roma midfielder, who caught the eye with France at the World Cup. The report claims United are prepared to table an offer worth close to €50 million (£42.7m) for the 23-year-old.

The path to Kone will not be straightforward. The same report notes interest from Chelsea, Atletico Madrid and Saudi side Al-Ahli, underlining the level of competition for a player whose blend of energy, ball-winning and forward thrust has made him one of the most coveted midfielders in Europe.

United, though, have made their intentions clear. A revamped midfield, fresh legs in goal, and now a battle in the market for a World Cup standout. The squad is being rebuilt piece by piece; the only question is whether they can land Kone to complete the picture in the centre of the pitch.
