Manchester United's Sesko Remains Absent Ahead of PSG Friendly
Manchester United head to Gothenburg this weekend with Paris Saint-Germain on the horizon, a glamour friendly that should be all about sharpness, rhythm and early statements. Instead, one of the dominant storylines revolves around a player who is not even on the plane.
Tielemans travels, Sesko stays home
Michael Carrick has named a 22-man squad for Saturday’s meeting with the European champions, a travelling party that includes new signing Youri Tielemans for the first time and captain Bruno Fernandes. It looks strong. It looks balanced.
It also looks incomplete.
Sesko’s name is missing again, a conspicuous omission for a striker signed to spearhead United’s new era. The 23-year-old aggravated a shin problem against Liverpool late last season, an issue that kept him out of the final three matches of the campaign. At the time, the diagnosis sounded reassuring: not serious, back for pre-season, nothing to worry about.
Weeks later, pre-season is almost gone and Sesko has yet to kick a ball.
Rehab steps up, questions grow louder
The Slovenia international has been seen at Carrington and the club has not hidden the fact he is working individually. He has not, though, joined full-contact training. That gap between optimism and reality is where the anxiety has started to creep in.
According to Manchester Evening News reporter Steven Railston, there is still no call for alarm. He reported on X that Sesko “is still on track to be fit for the start of the season” and has been “stepping up his rehabilitation at Carrington.”
Inside the club, the message is calm: the plan remains the same, the timeline remains intact.
Outside, patience is thinner.
United have yet to confirm whether Sesko will link up with the squad for next week’s training camp in the Republic of Ireland. That uncertainty has fuelled a growing sense of unease among supporters who have seen this film before.
Echoes of Matthijs de Ligt
The comparison many fans are making is blunt. Matthijs de Ligt was initially expected to miss one game last season. He ended up missing six months. What started as a minor issue turned into a long-running saga, and trust in injury updates took a hit.
So when a “not too serious” knock keeps a key player out of an entire pre-season schedule, alarm bells ring. The club insists there is no crisis. The silence over specific return dates hints at something less straightforward.
For Sesko, the problem is no longer just medical. It is footballing.
Fit for the opener, but ready?
On paper, the expectation is that Sesko will be available for the opening weekend of the new campaign. That is the line, and nobody close to the situation is contradicting it.
But being fit is one thing. Being ready is another.
United’s No.30 has effectively lost almost the whole pre-season, a crucial period for a 6 ft 5 in centre-forward still bedding into the rhythms of English football and Carrick’s demands. Match sharpness does not arrive on a physio’s table. It comes from minutes, duels, runs in behind, the repetition of chances taken and chances missed.
Right now, he has none of that.
United still have a small window to get him on the pitch before the serious business starts. A cameo in a late friendly, a carefully managed run-out, anything to break the cycle of updates and uncertainty.
If that opportunity does not come, Carrick may begin the season with his main striker technically available, yet still chasing the pace of everyone around him. For a club trying to reset its standards, how long can they afford to wait for Sesko to catch up?
